Hi Guys, first time posting on here so my apologies if this is in the wrong spot :)

I'm currently completing a Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) at Victoria University in Victoria, Australia
At the moment I am about half way through my 2nd year..

My question is can a person such as myself move to and work in America as a Paramedic or EMT etc when qualified and with a couple of years experience. It is my understanding that there is training in America (not just on the job), so would I need to undertake that training on top of my degree?

To put it in perspective, when I'm qualified I can do IV cannulation, give various analgesic drugs, adrenaline, manually assessed ECG's and defib, nitrates such as GTN, adrenaline, naloxone, lots of more fun things.

I cannot intubate (unless you count Laryngeal mask airways).

Any help would be appreciated :)

should do some research.....

i have a co-worker who has been living in the us as a non-citizen for 7 years she said that you cant be a paramedic/firefighter unless your a us citizen (shes here on a visa) so before moving out and looking for a job you may wanna see if the same rules apply to you coming from Australia or if theres some hoops to jump through or wait times before you can be a medic.

she works with me in the ER at a local hospital but she said specifically being in an ambulance isnt allowed unless your a US citizen.

She is wrong.

However, the OP will need a visa to enter the US with, and there are none specifically for paramedics.

maybe

maybe its a chicago thing or yah she could just be wrong just something i heard is all. (shes also from africa kind of a whole nothing situation than australia)

Its not a Chicago thing. Each state does not get to set it's own immigration laws.

It's all about getting a work visa. Paramedic would fall under Third Preference for Employment Visas (E3). The U.S. grants about 140,000 employment visas per year and E3 immigrants get 28.6% of those every year (so a little over 40000).

The problem is that the E3 category also includes "Unskilled" workers, so your chances are low to begin with, but with the amount of unskilled laborers that are trying to get jobs in the US, your chances of getting an employment visa are quite slim.

And on top of all of that stuff, you already need to have a job lined up, and the employer needs to be certified by the Dept. of Labor to hire immigrant workers and they need to have submitted a petition to make you eligible for one of those 40000 visas.

Your best bet is to forget about an employment visa and just marry a U.S. citizen. :P

Thats also easier said then done just ask Mr Brown.

Damn straight.

Mate, you are dreaming and even if you did get a work visa our qualifications are just not even looked at in the US without so much effort its easier to just say screw this its too hard.

Our education is light years ahead of the US anyway.

Yeah fair call, ah well may look into it further down the track
For now I should probably concentrate on finishing the degree and getting a job here anyway..

If I do end up going across, may just have to start at square one, or
get a labouring job......labouring probably pays more anyway......

Except that the Mexicans took all those......

You can always try Canada. Paramedic is on the National Occupational Classification list. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp

Check with our embassy. The worst they can say is no.
