SALMON, Idaho -- A four-year-old Salmon boy died in an apartment fire on Saturday night.
According to a press release from the Lemhi County Sheriff's Office, the Salmon Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at Imperial Apartments on Imperial Way at approximately 11:23 p.m. Saturday.
When they got to the apartment complex, the fire department noticed flames shooting out of two windows on the backside of the building as well as the front door of the structure.
Firefighters were told that a four-year-old boy was still inside on the second floor. However, due to the intensity of the fire and extreme temperatures inside, firefighters were not able to enter.
Once the fire was controlled, firefighters entered at approximately 11:50 p.m. and located the body of four-year-old Skyler Hitesman in a bedroom on the second floor. He had apparently died of smoke inhalation.
The boy's grandmother was also on the second floor, but she was able to get out and couldn't get to the boy before being over come with smoke. She was transported to Steele Memorial Hospital.
Firefighters remained at the apartments until 3:30 Sunday morning to mop up the fire. At this time the exact cause and origin of the fire is not known and is still under investigation. The Idaho State Fire Marshall's Office has been notified and will assist in determining the cause of the blaze this next week.
No further details have been released. Local News 8 will update this story if more information is released to the public.
