We run two 911 trucks and have our own supply/stock room so we're responsible for our own inventory. Usually everything runs pretty well, but once in a while we might get low on stuff because the "stockroom guy" is off for a couple of shifts, or we had unexpected demand for something... or a batch of stuff expires, mistakes, just plain forget, etc....
So I'm trying to reduce the time it takes to check inventory as well as make it easier for all staff to communicate that we are low on something.
This weekend I hacked together a mighty kludge that includes barcoding each shelf/box in the stockroom, writing a simple web based app to view inventory levels and what is on order, and finally a dead simple Android app (it has one button that says ORDER) that you point at the barcode. If someone is doing a shift check and find that we are low on head blocks or whatnot, they just aim the phone at the barcode and click to order!
This is probably going to work well for us. We are small and don't need anything sophisticated or expensive (we're non-profit). I thought I would just throw this idea out to the community to see if someone else might find it useful and maybe add some other useful functions. So if anyone is interested, feel free to contact me. I don't think it would take me long to polish it up so it's useful for someone else.
