Alphanumeric Pagers

I am interested in buying an alphanumeric pager. They are optional and not provided by my service. Does anyone know anything about them? Do I need to buy a wireless plan? Are they hard to program? Do I need a license?

You do not need a license to carry a pager. If your company sends out pages they should be able to provide you with all the information you need to obtain one.

Yes, you'll need a plan. No real programing, just a couple buttons, next/last/delete kind of stuff.

I have no clue about the plans but would bet it's based on the number you get (like a cell phone text plan but only 1 way).
