Just to first clarify, I am an EMT-B and I WILL be taking Paramedic later on. I am first getting me a job landed at a hospital or ambulance company for the time being. My questions is, in a few weeks I am about to take an Introduction course on basic cardiac dysrhythmias. Then ACLS and PALS course. What are your thoughts on an EMT-B having these credentials? I know I will not be able to use all of the training as it is above the scope of practice but just want input. The classes are going to be paid for so they wont cost me anything.

Honestly? An EMT having those kind of credentials are rather pointless and worthless for that matter. Just because you have said credentials doesn't mean you can use what you've learned beyond anything past an assessment. You CAN'T technically identify rhythms, CAN'T give drugs for any of those algorithms, CAN'T intubate, CAN'T place an IO, & ect..

In all respects you're still an EMT with a couple merit badges. You still have to operate under the scope of your system as a Basic. You aren't entitled to perform an of the skills your may have learned throughout those courses. In fact you would probably have no idea what they're talking about. Most of those courses assume you've learned a good portion of the materials being presented. It's like having tools that you can't use and have no idea what they're for.

I don't mean to sounds harsh, just trying to be honest. Good luck with medic school though!!

Sorry, just kind of skimmed through the first part. As long as you understand that you won't be able to exceed your scope of practice as a Basic, I guess why not. You may not understand much of what is being said, but if you're that intent on having those certs I guess go for it.

Thank you for the input!
What I am doing is I am going to take a class called Basic ECG Interpretation BEFORE ACLS or PALS. I will be using the book called "Introduction to Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmias" Before doing ACLS. What I'm trying to do is get a little more cardiac and ECG training so that I can have a better understanding on whats going on in the event that I am involved with assisting a Medic. To be a little better help and realy to just better know whats going on with cardiac PTs. Make sense?

Thank you though!

Yea, I completely misread the post. It's been a long day working good sir.

But sure, If you look at it from the medic assist aspect of it then go for it. Learning is never a bad thing, unless it's stupidity. Enjoy your little intro into cardiology, it only gets worse my friend. B)
