I never bothered with AEMT/Intermediate school. From the few people Ive talked to that took it, the class itself seems easy, substantially easier than Paramedic school and probably not much harder than EMT school. The hard part comes in the NREMT exam, which I've been told was harder than they expected.
Having worked with a couple of new AEMTs I was not particularly impressed with their ALS skills or knowledge. They got very little IV practice and calling them minimally competent was being generous. I have worked with AEMTs that were excellent at what they do, but they years of of EMT 911 experience and I think had learned a lot working on ALS trucks. They basically said the school itself was a joke but agreed the NREMT exam was somewhat difficult. As far as working on an ALS truck. I'd take an experienced EMT basic partner any day over an AEMT with no experience(although I greatly prefer to have a Paramedic partner).
