When and How do you use "Self Defense" on the truck?

I would rather them be oxygen deficient AND knock out their respiratory drive with benzos, and just add a paralytic to the mix, rather than them 'permanently' knock out myself or my partners. I've had about a 120 lb female PT high on amphetamines and a bunch of other drugs. This pt was combative...

When and How do you use "Self Defense" on the truck?

It's not just being armed. I wanted peoples opinions on when they will engage in a physical conflict with pt's and what they think warrants it. Not only that but I would like their take on the different "self defense" modalities different Fire/EMS personnel have or are willing to use when...

When and How do you use "Self Defense" on the truck?

When it appropriate to use "self defense" on the truck, and by what means of self defense do you utilize? Should EMS personnel be able to carry OC spray, ASP baton, taser or even a firearm?

    Versed vs. Ativan

Because the Versed/Valium will "relax" them, added with Fentanyls euphoric effect, makes for a more calm, happier patient. Like I said this is just an opinion and a preference. To each their own... :)

Greatest Contributor to Burnout in EMS

I totally agree!!! I would love to be an M.D, and my specialty be an anesthesiologist. BUT....It'll never happen. I'm only 22 but I don't have the money or the time... : (

    Versed vs. Ativan

Also, I think fentanyl should be in the mix as well. Mix and titrate to effect.

    Versed vs. Ativan

I've read that IV ativan can cause residual anxiety. It is my opinion that Versed and Valium are more effective than Ativan.

Greatest Contributor to Burnout in EMS

Thats a pretty rude way to reply to a post "retarded" Really? I dont ever recall saying that I was smarter than an M.D But we have Medics smarter than *some* MD's that we transfer our care to. One M.D in particular likes to kill our pt's by removing pacing pads, darn near as soon as we cross the...

Treating a patient with Symptoms of DT?

Also, I think it would have been up to you as to if you should have administered either benzo. If you thought it would have made a difference in improving his symptoms maybe it would have been a good idea to administer it. I think it just depends on the pt and what you think would be the most...

ET entubation in cardiac arrest victims

For a BIAD I like the King Airway. Do you have kings or just combitubes?

Treating a patient with Symptoms of DT?

I would have established an IV just incase he started to seize. However if the pt was agitated or combative I would have went with versed.

Greatest Contributor to Burnout in EMS

I don't understand why our pay is so crappy. We are basically pre hospital ER docs. The only difference is we dont write prescriptions. I have seen many Paramedics smarter than the doctors we transfer our care to.

    Versed vs. Ativan

Versed or Valium ALL DAY! I hate Ativan and I think it should be take off the truck!

    Just curious

It's something you get a "feel" for. My own personal way that I do it, that some may not agree with is, when I am ready to actually take the IV and stick the pt's arm, I take the catheter, remove the cover, slightly move the catheter up the needle to insure an easy advancement. I then take the...

    States and EMT-B Morphine Administration

I hope this is not too off topic, but I think the drug formulary/skills of an EMT and an Intermediate should be combined. OEMS has been talking about consolidating them for about 5 years now. Instead of EMT-B, EMT-I, EMT-P It would just be Advanced EMT and EMT-Paramedic. I think its a great...

What kind of analgesic do you use?

I read this whole thread again, and I haven't seen anywhere where it said "I'm a medic, so I know more than you do." ?
