    Clinicals outside of EMS

My advice would be to possibly find a nearby teaching hospital or shadow an MD in a non-OR setting and talk to that MD about wanting to shadow in the OR and they may be able to pull some strings. The sterility of the environment doesn't matter, if it did you'd never seen camera crews or other...

Ouch, well good luck they may be a bit faster now but who knows. Plus if you go in person you can ask to have your picture put on the card ;) Congrats on passing btw and good luck! :)

    License to practice in Kentucky

KBEMS is NOTORIOUSLY bad for getting your card in the mail. It took my Basic cert 4 weeks to get to me back in 2006. Fortunately for you if you call them they will let you go pick it up in Frankfort which is significantly more convenient if you live near Frankfort :P

    What maps do you use?

Google maps is WAY behind on some things and suprisingly Mapquest has more updated maps than google. The reason behind this is Mapquest uses Navtech for their map providers while google maps indexes several map makers to make their street maps and as a result sometimes new and even extremely...

    Static Cardiology Study Tips

Thanks for the advice even though I didn't realize I needed it. The way we practiced was to recite the entire algorithm to learn it. I will start practicing as above for boards, IE only choose one path, as long as it's right and I'm performing the correct interventions (or not performing as...

    Bonnaroo Medics

That's one way to go to bonnaroo without paying the outrageous ticket prices. I need to look into that :p

    Static Cardiology Study Tips

The rational I've always heard by saying "Consider" in a testing environment is that you are demonstrating that you know all options available to you. Not that you are copping out on making a decision. For example say you get the same scenario above and you don't even mention vasopressin, the...

    Static Cardiology Study Tips

I've been told that the stations tend to go something like: "You are on the scene of a pulseless apneic patient with this rhythm" They show you a picture of vfib and then you recite the algorithm. Begin CPR if unwitnessed, if witnessed defibrilate if appropriate at 200J monophasic (or whatever...

    Mobile Apps

I don't see an issue with this so much, granted when I use my cell phone on a call I usually say something like. "Sorry about this I just need to look up some specific information on one of your medications" or something like that. I think it looks about the same as reading your protocols to...

    Weird Interview Question

Not the weirdest question I've ever seen :P At my last interview I was asked: Q: "What is the last fiction book you read?" A: "Ummm....A star wars novel..." Q: "What was the title?" A: "Ummmmm <title>" They then proceeded to grill me on my Star Wars knowledge. Turns out one of...

Help me fill my personal EMT bag

I LOVE sam splints. I found a huge box of them from a local EMS supply company that went out of business. Instead of liquidating their inventory they donated all their stuff to our county, what we didn't use got sold off. I kept several of them and gave a ton to co-workers. They are...

need some help with trauma assessment!

I don't speak for others just myself. In my case I find them helpful for remembering things like practical exams and keeping a general tally on some things. For example AHA algorithms are pretty straightforward to remember however if you don't know how to apply those algorithms to an ever...

need some help with trauma assessment!

IF you follow the NREMT sheets and your teachers instructions it should be as follows: Just before assessing your ABC's the sheet asks you to assess for chief complaint/aparent life threats. You would verbalize this as: "Do I see any immediate threats to life?" "No" Continue Skill sheet OR...

Help me fill my personal EMT bag

While there may be no Duty to Act many states (especially places with rural areas) allow their emts and medics to respond. I'll give you an example: The service I work for is a mixed urban/rural environment. At the most extreme we sometimes have up to a 10-20 minute response and the same...

    New JUMP Bags for Rig

Going to second the two bags. Get a basic O2 bag, just something with a handle or shoulder strap for people to carry and a trauma/als kit for the rest. I've used no bag, a small 'sack' with a handle, and the huge O2 bags with 600 pockets for supplies and I (as well as my co-workers) prefer the...
