    Are You A "Heritage EMT"?

My dad's a Basic and has been for as long as I can remember. He was also a fire fighter which would explain why I felt the need to join the local VFD. LOL He loves it and so far I do too! He didn't want to go on to Paramedic but I'm planning to next fall.

Are most EMS personnel THIS unprofessional?

Blue humor is just a part of how things are done sometimes. While it isn't "nice" it's just there. Plus some people cope with the stress of EMS and blow off steam by talking about sex or using profanity. While I choose not to participate, I'd rather they do that than bring an uzi in with...

Would this make me a total whacker?

Using a jacket similar to the one they use would make you a whacker? Naw, stay warm. Wear the jacket!

    Companies w/ effective EMD

I'm glad some of you have dispatchers who actually have to know what they're doing. Our dispatch is the county dispatch... these are the people who will transfer a caller to us even if they're in another county and will argue with us on air if we ask for LEO backup. Needless to say, we talk to...

How would you feel about this?

I'd tell the instructor that you do not want your personal information, including your grades, posted again and I'd also make sure to let them know that you're not paying tuition to do their job (ie: teach the students). If you can make it out of there and pass NR, I'd definitely go elsewhere...

What do you like most and least

What I love: Learning more with each shift, getting to be in the ER some (we're hospital-based) and learning more from that interaction, the pay (not bad at all), having a role in patient care and when people really appreciate what we do. What I don't like: Lack of respect/understanding of...

    Is suggesting medication allowed?

My rule of thumb is: If I can't give it, I don't suggest it. It's outside of my scope of practice to give anything besides something like InstaGlucose, etc. so why am I going to suggest someone take a med that I can't give? Lawsuits, I want to avoid them as much as possible. Now that said...

Planned Maintenance: October 8th at 9:00 PM

I'll be OK because I'll be at the EMS for a bit working the third truck for the football game. Maybe you could go to a ball game. Or hang out with the drunken vikings.

Who wants a HOT PINK Littmann????

I'm with you! I've always said I would get the ugliest scope I could find because no one would steal it. I will buy a pink or neon green if they make it!

    Suggestion for search

Let's face it: A lot of people are lazy and won't bother using the search option (which is partly why I suggested in another thread about having a sticky on pants, boots and other equipment - they're more likely to pay attention to something like that). Most will just click the check box and...

    Interview Friday

Oh yeah, lots of AMR folks here. Heard good things about them, heard bad... the AMR crowd will be here soon so just sit back and relax. You'll get some good info.

    Working as EMT-B part time?

Know that you may not get off right when your shift is supposed to end. If your shift ends at 0700 and you get a call at 0650 you generally have to roll. It really depends on the policies of where you're working. Bottom line, know that you may not know get off right when you're "supposed" to.

    EMS and meal "breaks"

It depends on where you work, what kind of calls you're running and workload. I work at a hospital-based service in a small town that is 911 for the city and county and also does (mostly) outbound IFT to higher-level facilities. As for meal breaks, we eat when we're able. Normally we try to...

    Feedback: Open Letter To MMiz

Well, my schedule's somewhat changed so I have to work on Sunday (read: will not have Internet access). Might it be possible to post a transcript of the meeting so that those of us who can't be here can at least see what was discussed? Thanks.

    H1N1 Prep

What can EMS do to "prepare" anyway? We make sure we have plenty of PPE and all that available. The hospital (I work at a hospital-based EMS) offered seasonal flu vaccines free of charge to employees and plans to do the same with H1N1. Otherwise, I'm not totally sure what you're looking for... ??

    2 questions on lifting

    1. This has been addressed by others so I'll leave it be. 2. Sometimes doing it "properly" can be a chore but it's one I strive to do everyday for the sake of my back, my partner and my patient. Safety is the most important aspect in lifting. If you can't do it in a safe way and you get...

    Feedback: Open Letter To MMiz

There's a difference between an "educational" post and a post that is condescending, hateful and/or downright unprofessional. Yes, I have a pretty thick skin (getting picked on in high school tends to do that to a person) but that doesn't mean that I'm going to sit there and tolerate someone...

AAMS, NAEMT, IAFC respond to new Trauma series with letters of complaint

I totally agree but, as a guy with media experience, NBC will not change. An accurate representation of EMS wouldn't be interesting to the general public and likely wouldn't get ratings. Unfortunately that's all NBC cares about. Disgusting.
