    Classes This Semester

As I was accepted into Medic School this summer, and as classes are starting soon I just wanted to take the time to say : Good luck everyone with your classes this semester and the years to come. Remember just because you finish a class and get your cert it doesn't mean you know it all. KEEP...

    Nursing home nurses/moving pt's

I hate the nursing homes in my area. It seems like the only thing they can do is get a set of vitals.. And even then that's if we're lucky. Got a call for a PT with abdominal pain. Get there ask the nurses a couple questions as our PT isn't too verbal. The nurse turns and says to me "She's a...

    Tips for holding c spine?

NJ TEST situations : One student holds c-spine that's it. ( I prefer to squat over kneeling ) Another does rapid trauma assessment, and if you have a third they apply a collar after the student passes the PT's neck area to the chest. Then the third does vitals. When I went through EMT...

    Pcr

I'm always sure to do a full assesment on someone I believe to be intoxicated. As for the PCR, if the PT says he was drinking or is drunk put that in there. PT stated "I am drunk" "I have been drinking" etc. If not I will put "Smell of ETOH on PT's breath". "PT was acting as if he or she...

    Lung Sounds

Eh, should have worded it better. For example our good ole frequent fliers, that call daily for a ride to the hospital because they might hurt someone, when really its a ride to the hospital for food and a bed. Those get baby sat for the most part.

    Lung Sounds

Couldn't have said it better, minus Psych PT's , those I baby sit in the back of the ambulance and make sure they wear their seat belt.

    Locking Ambulances

When I am running on the ambulance , the rig is locked 100% of the time. Our rigs have a secure idle, so we leave the ambulance running while at the call location, only time the ambulance is turned off is at the hospital and the station. All of our outside compartments are locked as well...

    My BIGGEST pet peeves

3 AM, call for a "Medical Emergency" Dispatch : Caller reporting "Belly Pain" Get on location PT states he no longer has pain and refuses transport. Sign my RMA form, get back to the station, snuggle into my cozy bunk, fall asleep, *GONG* repeat address for a "Medical Emergency". A few more ...

How has your call volume been lately?

Throughout the year working 12 hr shifts at night 6p to 6a during the week , we run around 4 or 5 calls. Day shifts on the weekends, 6a to 6p can bring in 10 or so calls easily. EDIT : The heat hasn't added too many calls.

    NJ's new EMT Cirriculum

Apparently NJ has added new hours to the EMT - B course, as well as new material. I also heard that said students taking this new course will no longer become EMT-B's but become EMT-I's as NJ is going to start recognizing the EMT-I? If this is true will their be a bridge course for current...

    New to this

+1 Obviously you will get your book before you start the course? Just browse through it a little bit. Most likely you will get a course syllabus, with what will be going on each day of the course. So before you take your XYZ lecture, just browse through the chapter that covers XYZ, and...

    Hardest subject in EMT-B course?

When learning new things, try to understand WHY things occur, rather than just a long list of cause and effects. If you understand WHY something happens you'll be less likely to forget things. Other wise I don't think you will have any problems. Good luck!

[Tips] Disabled / Special Needs Patients

+1 I always explain what I'm doing no matter what the PT's consciousness is. IF the person is nervous and is non-verbal/deaf a rub on the back doesn't hurt.

EMT-B Practical and splinting of a long bone…

Easy way to remember KED strapping order... My Baby Looks Hot Tonight Middle Torso strap. Bottom Torso strap. Legs. Head. Top Torso strap. After tightening the straps make sure your PT is still able to breathe comfortably. Should just be able to get your fingers under the straps.

    16yo WANNA BE ;)

Not sure of the laws in FL, but in NJ you are able to take an EMT-B course at the age of 16, and then you can be a certified EMT-B, just your cert will be Provisional. You can try joining your local volunteer squad if you have one in your area, most places you can join at 16. Then you can...
