Yep! That is the question, isn't it? LOL! Think what is really needed is research that clearly shows the level of risks in clearing c-spine in the field using different tools (NEXUS, CCS Rule, etc.) vs immobilization in the field by medics and clearance by a physician in the ED...

I would love to put you in touch with the online community promoting community paramedicine. With health care costs rising and our society aging, I think it will come soon enough to everyone's neck of the woods!

Cultural Issues in Paramedic and Health Care Practice in General.... You are bringing up something very important. We all need to first recognize and become sensitive to cultural differences and then proceed to developing "cultural competencies" for paramedic practice in...

If we are going to truly to become recognized as profession at not just understood in many circles as being an adjunct to medical care by self-regulated professionals, we need to develop our own body of research (and many other things). If your service has been using NEXUS for that long and it...

Suggest you also check out this evidence-based research.... Note that NEXUS and the CCS Rule are tools for physicians and there is no evidence-based research on their use in the pre-hospital setting as far as I know. However, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't promote the use good research...

Compassionate, ethical, professional care.... It looks like we have a long way to go in our countries as well! LOL! Any ideas on how to deal with issues like this in your neck of the woods? Any others have ideas on how to increase professionalism in paramedicine (our stomping ground!)?

Hypothermia versus spinal imbolization..... I think use of a protocol to "clear c-spine" before an "emergency move" out of the severe cold would be a better approach.... Liability concerns go the best of patient care?

Bodily fluids and ethical choices.... I throw in my vote for bodily fluids, too! I have a problem with most of the examples given in the first post. If you are there to care of patients REGARDLESS of what might ail them, then you are in the right job. If you want to "cherry pick"...
