I have decided I dislike sticking the elderly. They all seem to pray very loudly and scream about the devil...
I think it has more to do with the fact that they all had dementia and I live the the Deep South than my IV skills...
Hopefully.
As a somewhat "older" female Basic, I see a lot of younger Basics exhibiting "risky" sexual behavior. But I don't think it's because they're Basics, I think it's because they're late teens (18-19) and early twenties. I was the same way before I met my husband. I wouldn't exactly say its an EMS...
I'm not sure which sucks more about being a military wife...
The quiet or the sheer boredom that comes with your husband being away.
Right now boredom is winning.
I didn't think of it that way, I was thinking more along the lines of "How would *I* feel?" But now that I see where someone else would be coming from I can understand why my fellow classmates kinda hung back.
I figured it would bode well for me if I was polite and asked for permission first...
That's actually one thing I noticed tonight, I was the only one asking if I could physically touch the patient.
"Hi my name is Porta, I'm an Advanced student, would you mind if I started an IV on you/palpated your abdomen/etc?"
.
Thank you all very much for your responses. I feel more...
No, no that's not vague to me at all. The nurses also said its patient specific. One of the pts I had tonight was already in enough pain, and I wasn't about to cause them more grief by turning them into a shishkabab.
After the nurse and my Preceptor said that if the pt is unconscious (or an...
Today was my first ER rotation. Things went well, I had a good time and felt comfortable interacting with patients, pushing drugs (although I most def need more experience) etc. What I wasn't comfortable with was IVs. I'm okay with missing them, I'm okay with retracting the catheter and seeking...
1. Offensive smell (perfume, body spray, cigs, etc.)
2. Abrasive attitude (know-it-all, contradictory, too much swearing...)
3. Just being an all around jerk.
I'm pretty easy going and not much bothers me, but those three drive me batty.
I'd be interested and seeing studies on that. I can't say that I have seen studies, but then again, I'm ashamed to say I've never really looked.
Do you think the AHA would have anything?
Hrm, good call. I always got chewed out for using them, but I worked for a small FD, and they weren't keen on us using a lot of abbreviations. Thanks for clarifying that.
Try not to use abbreviations. There are others outside of EMS and the hospital that read your PCRs and they're not always going to know what the abbreviations mean.
