Decreased Call Volume and System Response

My FT job has cut PT hours, but a few people have deployed to NY, so there are open shifts for those who want to work. Many PT employees have voluntarily stepped away (or simply, accepted the lack of hours) due to personal concerns. There's been a definite drop in the transports, both 911...

    Coronavirus Discussion Thread

According to https://covid19.healthdata.org/sweden, "ICU beds available is the total number of ICU beds available for COVID patients minus the average historical ICU bed use."

    Coronavirus Discussion Thread

According to the IHME site the projected peak in Sweden is the 29th of April; they will require 1093 ICU beds and have only 79 available. They will definitely be the interesting counterpoint to social distancing.

I carry bacon in my pocket. For just such a possibility.

    No Ambulances Available

There are few EMS agencies where management would be comfortable telling the citizens how often the ambulance is blacked out.

Montana Firefighter Allegedly Fired Over Instagram Workout Photos

She's a legit gym rat. I'm really not sure what there is to be bothered by. Man, where have I heard that before.

For some reason I translated the original post as a, "I was carrying it for a friend..." type of deal.

Government agencies with IFT and wheelchair service?

Don't most? In the Kansas City area, I think the largest 5-6 FDs that also have an in-house ambulance service (KCKFD, KCFD, LSFD just to name a few) do their own transfers with some exceptions.

Shift Work Models from Around the World

Midnight to noon? That sounds awful. It almost sounds impossible.

Shift Work Models from Around the World

It's egalitarian, but it's terrible. We do 48/96s and run about 4-5 calls a shift. I love it.

    QI can be heartbreaking

Was it the care or the way it was documented that was the worst? TAing for 200 level college courses was heartbreaking for me, without the lie/death of a code. I found it hard to imagine why someone would pay good money to go to school and put in literally 0 effort.

Am I an idiot for becoming an EMT with a college degree?

Plenty of my coworkers are obviously intimidated by my college degree (and previous non-EMS career) and a few of them don't behave well because of that. I've never let it feel like a failure on my part that I could be making more money each year. I chose this for reasons that are important...

Well, shucks, I just learned something.

Question about age (Do you feel EMS has an age limit)

There are multiple threads on this, and I'm sure I commented in at least one of those too... I was 40 when I got my EMT, and will be something like 48 when I get my medic. I hope to do this until I'm 60 (65, if my health allows).

    Our station was broken into.

For us, we get three. One for the ignition and then one for each of the two crew members. We are supposed to lock the unit when not in it, but in practice, this is only ever done when we're posted and go inside the grocery store together. I don't think I'll appreciate much when they...

    Our station was broken into.

I am nearly 100% certain that our transits can be locked while running - I'll have to check into that next time I'm at the station.
