    Story time

One of the best pieces of advice I've heard about seizures is that "people with seizure histories seize." It sounds simple, but it's easy to freak out and panic when we see a patient suddenly suffer from generalized seizure activity in our presence. We're not there to see seizures themselves all...

We're losing a couple promising new hires at our department to the great dysfunctional monstrosity that is DC FEMS. Damn shame too as they're both decent people and good paramedics. Oh well. Best of luck in DC!

Friday nights off work can be a pain in the *** when everyone you know is working. Evidently I need to meet some people who aren't in healthcare, Fire, EMS, or LE.

I had a no hitter today too. I stayed two hours late for my relief and still didn't leave the station. It's the recipe for a perfect night shift but a longggg day shift. Not good when I start and finish the book I brought to work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Amidarone ?

Amiodarone is used for termination of harmful arrhythmias and maintenance of a stable heart rhythm. Patients take prescribed oral antiarrhythmics all the time even when they are currently in a stable rhythm. As with many drugs, amiodarone needs both a loading dose and a maintenance dose to...

We're getting Levophed at our next protocol update later this year. Jury is still out on Ketamine. I can't say I use pressors all that often, but norepinephrine seems to have a bit more utility for our purposes than dopamine.

(Almost) Desperate for full time EMS work in Tennessee, PLEASE HELP

FT EMT positions aren't particularly easy to get for UC Health either, or at least they weren't a few years ago. You would still need your IV and EKG certs, and most EMTs start out as volunteer reserves, then PRN PT, then FT. There are some good services in CO, but they are competitive. Sent...

    A lacerated artery

I think this is key. Free standing EDs are suddenly extremely worthwhile if you're 15 minutes away from a real trauma center.

WilCo was on my shortlist before moving to Delaware. Not that it would have been guaranteed by any means, but I had an interview all set up there, but the SCEMS offer came through first. Tough to turn down a guaranteed job just for the promise of an interview somewhere else. Sent from my...

    Sussex EMS

It's typically more than 3 months. We call it "the process." It's nothing more than a longer than average FTO period. I've made a pretty long post on it before, but I can't find it readily. I'm on vacation now, but I'll try to reply a bit more when I get a chance. Sent from my iPhone using...

    Sussex EMS

I've worked for SCEMS for about three years now. I don't plan on retiring from there, but I absolutely recognize the appeal. It is a career department. We have a lot of people who have worked here 25 years and are in the process of retiring out with full pensions, and many more at various stages...

    Overtime vs. 2nd Job

In reality, you have to be careful to withhold enough from your second job so you don't get reamed when you file your taxes. If you make 60K at your primary job and 20K at your second, you may inadvertently pay far too little taxes on your 20K extra employment as they tax it like it is your only...

    Sussex EMS

I find there's more to "do" in the eastern part of the county. It's much more developed in the Lewes/Rehoboth Beach area compared to most of the county, and many of the restaurants and shops are staying open year round now instead of just the summer months. I don't have any kids so I have no...

    Checking pulse

If I actually count a rate 15 seconds x 4. That's a big "if" though as I very rarely actually count a rate. Manually palpating a pulse is checking for presence, strength, regularity, and a general feel for fast/slow/normal. The actual rate is going to be displayed on the monitor the EMT is...
