    EMT's checking BS

Oral glucose? Food? I worked a hypoglycemic patient that was treated by simply having him eat. BGL was 20. He was alert and oriented, able to swallow. BLS could do the same.

    EMT's checking BS

Every system should be an ALS system. I don't understand why they send an engine and a squad on a sick case? Just send one ALS ambulance. I've never understood CA's system with fire and private ambulances responding. I'm a big fan of the 3rd service (ambulance district) model.

    EMT's checking BS

I just can't wrap my mind around how a$$ backward California is. What's the harm in BLS having a glucometer? If a diabetic can check their own sugar, why can't the first responders?

    Zofran potentiates opiates?

Ahh, that's got to be rough. I've never had much success with the tablets.

    King airway in obese patients...

RSI'ing this patient once she starts crashing is going to be a disaster. You noted that you were having to work to keep her in the high 80's, low 90's. Once a patient's pulse ox drops below 90, its going to start dropping exponentially faster. You have think, she has no residual volume due to...

    King airway in obese patients...

This patient should been intubated prior to your transfer. The ED physician should of either RSI'd or not at all. I understand he wasn't comfortable with his own skills but he did not help himself by administering the Etomidate. He gave a sedative to a patient that was already unconscious. It...

    EMT program in Columbia, MO

To be honest, I'm not sure yet. I'll let you know. I plan to keep a part-time gig. I know my girlfriend and friends will appreciate it. I'm looking forward to spending my weekends playing ice hockey, camping, shooting, etc. I've noticed the daily grind tends to make people bitter, at least the...

    EMT program in Columbia, MO

Well I work as a full time paramedic, make good money, and have obtained CCEMTP and FP-C. However I want the 9-5 job. I know that just sounds terrible, but I want my weekends off to enjoy with my friends (most of which work 9-5). Being off during the weekdays is almost worthless as there's not...

    EMT program in Columbia, MO

That was me 9 years ago, trust me, stay at MU, stay in Engineering, and join a volunteer fire dept if you want to play. For someone like yourself, its just not worth it. I left MU to pursue a fire/ems career. I'm now finishing my CPA at UMSL and plan to do that once I'm done.

    Ready for an unpopular idea?

I'm not sure what you mean by "make it into an amb" but we get students and new employees all the time who have no business doing this job. Like others have said, the academics are not necessarily hard however its all about attitude and composure, and in my opinion, those are very hard to teach.

    Broken fingers with elevator BP

The medic's behavior was completely uncalled for. Did the patient have any other complaints other than his fingers hurting?

Feeling discouraged, freakish. Am I cut out for EMS?

I think it's time you put your foot down and say I can do this. Unfortunately with your track record you're going to have to fix this sooner rather than later. As you've realized, most of your problem stems from confidence. Don't attempt an iv, start an iv. Don't over think it, its a simple...
