    Pain management

No, he falls into the category that does a proper assessment. It is imperative to be able to match complaints/findings and see what holds water and what doesn't. This has more to do with just narcs. Some of us work in systems that your transport decision is made by a good assessment.

    Pain management

Bias aside, I think this has more to do about complaints not being supported by exam/objective findings. Would you give any other drug that was not indicated by YOUR findings? I'll give an example, you have an asthma patient that reports shortness of breath. S/He's 100% on room air, has clear...

    Pain management

All I'm advocating is that you do a thorough assessment. A verbal pain scale is just one piece of that puzzle. Patient request is not an indication for medication.

    Tachycardia

I'm playing hockey a little bit later, come take my pulse during one of the breaks, it'll probably be bounding. Did you check a BGL? Kids his age tend to not prepare as they should for athletic events, I myself was guilty of this. Tachycardia and palpitations are a symptom. In fact, I remember...

    Tachycardia

I think that may explain the tachycardia. Remember, his heart rate being "150" is not the same as an adult. If he's asymptomatic then I'd just watch him. No oxygen, no paramedics. You feeling his heart beating is not a symptom.

    Pain management

Do your findings match the subjective complaint? If not, no pain meds. I could honestly care less what they rate their pain at if the exam findings are inconsistent with the complaint. You have to consider the big picture, especially if the patient has a hx of frequently reporting vague...

I'd start with a critical care class and then get the ACE SAT book, as well as the ASTNA book.

I Want to be a Paramedic/Suggestions for which BA/BS to go for?

I'm going to go against the grain here and say get a degree in something non EMS related. Something you can fall back on and that pays decent. No liberal arts degrees, no psych. Something that if you ever want to leave the field you can get a decent job.

Right now just full time because I'm also a full time student. Some time in the not so distant future it'll be full time accountant, part time medic.

    A Rant

If it truly is just a seat belt uh "violation" then ya, your partner is a **** and total tool. However this obviously goes much deeper, I'm assuming you two normally don't get along? Things like this are a quick way to get yourself "blacklisted." You'll earn a reputation as a tool that will...

Paramedics amputate man's leg to save his life

Don't forget in some states, (Missouri and Texas come to mind) there is no state scope of practice. It is up to each medical director to set a "scope of practice" for his service. Between that and morals, I'd be willing to do any procedure I felt comfortable with if it meant saving a life.

    EMT's checking BS

No, but if the fire dept arrives on scene before us, has a positive stroke scale, time of onset, and normal blood glucose level then I can go ahead and arrange air transport while en route.

    EMT's checking BS

So why not prove otherwise earlier? What if it's a suspected stroke patient with slurred speech? Wouldn't it be beneficial for the EMT first responders to rule out hypoglycemia quicker and get a stroke protocol started quicker? Or if it is hypoglycemia, correct it so the patient can be...

    EMT's checking BS

Say what you want but it works well for us here in MO. You can make a good living as a transport only medic. This allows employers to attract and keep good employees. We're not a stepping stone for the fire jobs.
