I work until 20:00 on Christmas Eve then hop a 23:00 flight across the country. It's going to be an interesting holiday.

Tell us about your First Call ever and ...

LOL. My first call was a 05:00 fistula that wouldn't stop bleeding and needed to go across the street to the hospital. My FTO's partner ran most of the call because I didn't know where to grab the patient to help them stand. Oh, what a difference a year makes.

    My BIGGEST pet peeves

The nurses at our level 1 trauma center are awesome. Not only will they chair that patient but they will give them a lecture about not abusing the EMS system, and if it's a chronic abuser they might make the person sit for an extra few hours.

    My BIGGEST pet peeves

People who don't know what meds their on or what their meds are for. If I'm taking medication you bet I'm damn sure I know what I'm on and why I'm on it.

    My BIGGEST pet peeves

Giving a radio report beginning with "we are 5 minutes out..." then the nurse telling me to stand by for 4 1/2 minutes and getting pissed when she comes back and I inform her that we are at the door. Getting a patient to the ER after doing a good exam and suddenly they report all manor of...

    Thought's on Pulse Oximeters

I really am more interested in having one for sat readings the pulse is just a bonus. I'm thinking on inter facility transports with a stable patient. Diving in for a carotid pulse is unnecessarily invasive just so that I have numbers to put on my report. In this instance I trust the little...

    Thought's on Pulse Oximeters

This is true, but if a wrist is squishy do you think the other pulse points are going to be less squishy?

    Thought's on Pulse Oximeters

It's Christmas time and I'm asking for a pulse oximeter (what a nerd, right?) My issue is that I can't find much useful information on the web about different pulse ox devices. Does anyone have an opinion about brands or specs? They are just so useful when I have a very bari patient and I...

Dilemma - Nursing School or Medic?

I've been thinking about the same situation. I've been talking to a lot of nurses and medics and in general the medics seem happier and like their jobs more. In Seattle being a paramedic does put you into the golden handcuffs, it's a great job but there's not much room for advancement. My...

    Unions for EMS

Agreed. I'm a teamster and sadly with my company it's necessary or I'd be riding a bicycle to calls. Remember the union is another bureaucratic entity that's adding more red tape and more politically minded individuals into your company. Everyone has an angle. Like others have been saying...

Going on calls without someone to hold my hand...

yes, it get's better with every call, but never stop learning from your calls. When I cleared field training I got paired up with another FNG. We did some dumb stuff and way over reacted to some situations, but no one died and I learned a lot from my mistakes.

    A few career questions.....

    1. How did you get into this career? My wife was a Mt. rescuer in High School. She thought I'd like it, and she was right. 2.What is a typical day on the job like? Every day is different, that's what I like. basically sit in the rig for 12 hours, nap, eat, drink coffee, run some calls, joke...

    EMS vs Nurses

This is so true... I should have put this in the pet peeve thread because it happens so often. However, when I do get that RN who does exactly what I expect of them and has their act together I am always quick to comment on how grateful I am for their good work. (This also goes to firefighters...

    My BIGGEST pet peeves

pet peev's Arriving at a SNF, asking the CNA or LPN what's going on and hearing, "I don't know, I just started shift." "How much is this going to cost?" If you're healthy enough to worry about the price you could probably take yourself. "Can I have some water?" Why do people suddenly...
