Here's my recommendation. Make an appointment with someone in HR at your area hospitals. Talk to them about what positions they have (not openings) and what training or certifications are required to fill them. Often a position is not listed as open, but when a candidate appears, the opening is created.

Also talk to the department heads of the local ERs. If you tell them that you are researching job options and not just angling for a job at that time, they are more likely to be honest with you than they will if you are applying for a position. There is a wealth of information there that can be tapped into. Anything we offer will be speculation based on what is happening in our area.

If you lay your cards on the table, in a non-interview situation, you will get the answers you want and the information you need. Make sure to tell the people you talk to that you only want about 15 minutes of their time at their convenience. Then make sure that you only take the 15 minutes and thank them profusely.
