How much clinical time did you have in your Basic class?

I'm a few days into my EMT-B class and so far so good. I'm likeing everything they are telling us so far and excited about getting CPR certified next week. My only concern so far is the amount of Clinical time they require on an ambulance to take the state license test. In our class it is only 10 hours and to me it seems kind of short considering its only a 2 month class to begin with. So how much time did you guys do and do you feel 10 hours is enough?

in our 2 month class we did one 12 hour shift on ambulance and one 12 hour shift in ER. I wish we could have done more!

Back when I did our EMT-IV program (i/85) it was the equivalent to EMT-Basic with IV skills, certain meds, IM/Subq injections, etc. , in that we had the i/85 training but took the NREMT-B, our requirement was as follows. However, we were required to ride the entire time.

Clinical hours: 84 hours divided into 42 hours in the hospital setting and 42 hours in the ambulance setting.

20 patient contacts, 10 in the ER 10 on the ambulance. with a Min of 48 hours between the two. But the hours were not the thing, if you didnt have the pt contacts, You couldnt pass the class

Seems like everyones getting more then 10 hours which I don't like. I'm sure the class is gonna teach a ton but still 10 hours seem so short..I guess Ill just have to see how things go later on down the road.

I will state that while we had zero hours, I have ridden about 32 hours with a local service (which I am interviewing with Friday). I would have liked to have had some time during class.

Ok well heres another question for you guys...Our syllabus says must complete 10 hours clinical time between hospital or ambulance. Do you suggest going with the hospital or ambulance? I plan on working with a private ambulance service so I'm assuming ambulance time but it seems like the hospital may see more action

i would do the ambulance time. during my emt class we didnt cover anything about ambulance operations or documentation. first time i had been on a truck was when i got hired at my current company. hardest part about it was getting the hang of the ambulance and doing pt charting.

I always liked the ER clinicals because that is how I racked up my required IV sticks that were required by the state. However, I don't think you will be doing IV's, so probably ambulance. I am surprised you are given the choice. Most programs state you must have x Hours Hospital ER time, x Hours Ambulance time.

Hospital. There are people there that are vastly more educated that you can learn a whole lot from. Also, you'll see a larger variety of stuff and get more patient interaction since there's a never ending line of patients.

Well if I am allowed to do more time then required then I will do as much as I possibly can as I want as much experience I can get before getting on the job. We haven't actually covered any of the specific requirements in class for this stuff yet but I was just reading threw the syllabus and that is what it said was just 10 hours.

We had to do 60 hrs of clinical time. 10 ER 10 Dispatch and 40 on the box. The service I did my ride time with is hospital based so when we weren't out on a call I was in the ER heling the dr's and nurses.

I had 280 clinical hours for my class. The first part was in the hospital (L&D, CCU, ICU, ER, Psych) and the second part was on ambulances. I am glad that I got to have this experience, although I still feel like I could use more of them. I learned a lot and enjoyed my shifts.

BLS Education (Primary Care Paramedic) is a two year FT program here. As part of that I had:
- 16 x 8hr hospital rotations
- 45 x 12hr field placement (assigned to precepting crew)
