when pts ask you personal information

I've had alot of people as me about the ambulance (we drive the Dodge Sprinters) and a lot of people ask me about the difference between EMT & medics. I don't usually get a lot of personal questions because our transport times are usually pretty short. I usually ask most the questions in order to get my assessment done.

Do you tell them it's because your awesome? haha

That's just it, it IS because im awesome , but it actually just means I have a college degree and paid more to the state lol.

Most common questions for me are age and where I live. For age I tell them. For where I live I say the biggest city in my county even tho I don't live there. I don't want patients knowing what city I live in (alot of 5150 patients).

My old name tag had my first and last name on it. A 5150 patient I transported tried to add me as a friend on Facebook. The next day I requested a name tag with just my first letter of my last name.

Most of our employees do this. In fact, If you look up AMR RivCo's SOG's the name policy for uniforms is first name, first letter of last name.

My biggest one is fairly minor on the scale of things, yet entrenched in living where I do: If a single day goes by where I'm not asked by someone "Where in Australia are you from?" then I've not left the house.

I'm English, lived in London for my first 18 years. How North Americans can be so woefully bad at accents entertains me!

One job I wore a badge saying "Not Australian" on it. What is it? Do I look like a convict? :)

So what part of Australia are you from? Do you visit New Zealand much?

It seems like most common personal question I get is the "Are you related to So-an-do?" sort.

Are you J____'s twin?
Nope, I'm his older sister.

Are you A____'s younger sister?
Nope, I'm her older sister.

Are you J____'s sister?
Nope, she's my mom.

If someone happens to know my last name, I often get asked if I'm related to someone else with my last name. My answer to that is that if its spelled the same way, it can be traced back to the first <my last name here> who came to America in the 1700's, but since he had 23 children who survived to adulthood, its probably not any closer than that.

I looked in the SOGs I was given and all it says is "company issued name plate with the correct title is to be worn at all times centered just above the right breast pocket".

I'm usually asked about age, do I like my job, how long have I been doing it, what's the training like, difference between EMT and medic, do I see gross/gory things, etc. I flip it on to them too "so what do you do? How long have you been doing it? Etc." Some people ask about my last name cause it looks very crazy, and they ask where I'm from since I guess I have an accent (lived in the area since birth :s).
