NY is on of the 10% of all states which does not automatically recognize the national registry qualification. Funnily enough, my NY state practical exam (medic) was the NR practical exam, with an NR examiner on site. So when I passed the one practical exam, I actually got signed off for both the state and NR. All that was left to do was take the State written, and NR written and I had both state and registry qualifications.
NY EMS up in Albany works in geological time, but maybe someday they will join the majority of the rest of the US to have some sort of standardized nationally recognized qualification. The NR is as near as we have right now, so I would encourage anyone to get it on top of their other obligations. You never know what is round the corner, particularly if you are an "I" or "CC"
