Hi! I am wanting to take some classes with the South Carolina Fire Academy between January - June. My question is what is Trench Rescue 1? My type of situations would that type of training be an asset in.

Without trying to sound rude, have you tried contacting the South Carolina Fire Academy or looking at their website? Their number is (800) 896-1070 or (803) 896-9800 and have they a whole directory of people.
Alternatively, their curriculum catalog states:
This course is designed to enable the first responder to identify actions to take on the scene of a trench collapse. Topics include: OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926, hazards associated with trench collapse, operational plans for trench rescue, and shoring techniques for trench collapse.
Prerequisite: 3310
Hours: 24
Students: Min: 20 Max: 30
Resident fee: $100 on-site; $300 non-municipal; $384 out-of-state, military, $155 off site municipal. Meals and dorms extra.
Grant fee: $7,200
Regional Delivery: Contact regional office for fees. Must have an approved facility.

Imagine your local municipal water authority down in a trench, digging to repair a waterline that's buried ten feet below the street. Now, imagine that for some reason the federal mandated trench protection fails and the trench collapses, trapping men inside. How do you get them out without causing further collapse and endangering rescuers. That's what trench rescue is...
As far as what certifications are required... This is a basic class in trench rescue, so in theory if you're taking it you don't have any prior certification in it. It does list a pre-requisite, which, according to their course catalog that MMiz posted, is Low-Angle Rope Rescue, so if you haven't taken that class you're S.O.L.
