Study Highlights:
Giving magnesium to stroke patients in an ambulance soon after symptoms began did not reduce the severity of disability measured 3 months later.
The study successfully demonstrated that up to three-quarters of stroke patients calling 9-1-1 early can be started on treatment in the first “golden hour” after symptoms emerge.
This early-treatment system opens the door to testing other possibly brain-saving therapies.

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 13, 2014 – Giving intravenous magnesium to stroke patients soon after the start of symptoms, in an attempt to protect brain cells deprived of oxygen, failed to improve stroke-related disability 3 months later, according to research presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2014.
