I am looking for some information on reciprocity for the Alaska MICP license.

I am currently licensed at the paramedic level in my home state and have been for 5 years. My question is regarding the NREMT requirement within the application for MICP reciprocity. When I completed my paramedic training in order to gain my current state licensure I took and passed the NREMT-P practical and written exams. However, I never renewed my NREMT certificate. When reading the application packet for reciprocity it states

"(6) pass the written and practical examination for emergency medical technician-paramedic administered by the National Registry of
Emergency Medical Technicians; and
(7) submit verification of licensure from the appropriate licensing authority in each state, territory, or province where the applicant
holds or has ever held a license as a paramedic or other health care professional"

So all of that just to ask, do I need a current NREMT-P certification or will my previous certification count as taking and passing the NREMT-P to gain my MICP in Alaska?

Thanks in advance for any information you guys and gals can provide me!

If there is a better place for the question please feel free to move it or let me know and I can repost it. I am really in need of clarification on this, I have contacted the Alaska State Medical Board and they have yet to respond. Again any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to have NR.

This is why I have always told people once you get it, do not let it go...even if you think you are going to live in your state forever..la la la...things change, that's life.

You also need to have an Alaskan Physician Sponsor.

I moved to Alaska in 2004 left a few years later, but loved it there.

MICPs are not common. My # was 3 digits.

Where are you planning to live and work? Your new employer should be able to assist. Be advised, much of Alaska is volunteer unless you are working as a flight medic.

They rely heavy on the EMT III (pseudo medic).

I am interviewing for a flight position and if I get the position my companies medical director will be my physician sponsor. Just reading the way the application read it just sounded like I may not need to have current registry just proof that I took and passed the exam previously. I see you have posted previously about the eeii.org refresher, do you know if NREMT still accepts this as a refresher course? I guess I will be working fast to get my NREMT current! The position will be out of Anchorage, if you have any other helpful information about moving and living in Alaska I would love to hear more.

Guardian? :)

All my previous information about eeii still remains the same.

yeah I think I saw that posted on flightweb. Congrats and keep us up to date if it all works out, I would be curious to hear more.

akflightmedic, I sent you an email!

Let's just say it is for one of the two main flight services based out of Anchorage!

Just got a return e-mail from the AK state medical board, they say that my NREMT-P does not need to be current. They only need proof of previously taking and passing the NREMT-P exam. I am just finishing up my refresher so I am going to recertify anyways just to make life easier in the future.

So do you definately need a job first to get reciprocity for the Physician sponsorship? I am NREMT-P Current.

If it wasn't the one AK mentioned, you might want to read their protocols before you get too excited.

The protocols for both services seem to be fairly progressive. Can you elaborate a little more, I would be interested to hear your opinion.

If the other company's protocols are progressive, then your current protocols must be in the dark ages. They are a flight company in the largest state in the nation and they can't initiate nitro drips. Only continue them if already initiated by the sending facility. Makes perfect sense when there is no sending facility in 90% of the state.

According to their flight protocols it states they can initiate a nitro drip if SL nitro is not anticipated to change the pain or if after SL nitro there is no change in the pain then they can start a drip. Maybe we are talking about a different service but I also could have old protocols. It took me a while to find both services protocols so the could be outdated.
