Ok, so this morning I went down to the station to ask my instructor some questions about my class material. I got there at around 7 and went inside to see what was up. He showed up around 7:30 and we sat down and went over the class material that I was having trouble with. By the time we got done it was almost 9. I decided to hang around for a little bit and catch up on the latest news around town. So here I am sitting here drinking coffee and gabbing with the Medics and the director when the tones drop. It's a BLS transfer. No emergency. So the director goes, "Take the Braun SCXL and take the schoolboy here with you. I was shocked- me, a student, getting to go on an interstate transfer to Barnes-Jewish in STL. Anyway, 2 Medics went and pulled out the rig and I did a quick check before I hopped in the back and said, "Let's roll". We went to the sending hospital and got our pt., got the info, and took off. I called shotgun for the trip down there, and I had my laptop out doing stuff for class, taking notes for school, etc. etc. We get down by Litchfield, ILL on the Interstate and things went to hell in about 5 secs.

Pulseox drops like a dead cow, BP goes waaaayyyy down, and monitor starts freaking out. I slid back into the back to see if I could be of assistance. The Driving Medic snatches the radio and asks for assistance if any is available. He sets up a rendezvous and we pick up an EMT-I about 5 mile down the road. The EMT drives while the 2 Medics work on getting the pt. stabalized; I go back up front as it is too crowded in the back. ISP (Illinois State Police) gave us an escort unit, a Ford expedition with command package. He came on the radio and said dispatch put him on the road to clear a path for us.

So anyway I am up front with the EMT, and the 2 Medics are in the back. The ISP unit is in front of us with l/s, as it went to a priority 1 when the :censored::censored::censored::censored: hit the fan. We are in the left lane of the interstate, and the other vehicles on the road were trying to get into the right lane to get out of the cop's (and our) way. We were now doing about 75 in the left lane; things were clear for about 2 mile out. It was fine until all of a sudden some inattentive tramp in her big SUV swerves out in front of us. My heart stopped instantly when that big black tahoe jumped out in front of us. Scared the hell outta me! The EMT starts slowing down, while I'm laying on the squawker trying to get her attention. When she finally does figure it out, she does this little number and jumps over into the median, almost spinning out in the process. I'm sitting over there going, "OMG. We just missed death. She almost got killed. Holy crap." Then here comes the state cop on the radio, asking what in the hell happened. We told hi mwhat happened and he siad he would get another ISP unit out there to bust her ***. Sure enough. When we get to the hospital and go in to drop the pt., he gives us details about how another unit came on scene to deal with the grim reaper in an SUV. Apparently she was texting, saw the ISP unit, got over, then got back into our lane after he passed her and didn't see us until I laid on the squawker. Just goes to show you how many morons there are out there with license to drive (i mean kill). Also, wear those seatbelts!!! An unrestrained Medic becomes projectile in the event of a sudden stop or crash. Thank God for safety nets or we woulda been treating 1 of our own today. Stay safe out there; you never know when some idiot is goign to miss out on seeing flaming red lights and squawling sirens of death and pull out in front of you.

I use to DESPISE transfers to St Louis because of how crazy people drive in that city.

I see where that happened on the Ill side but it wouldn't have suprised me one bit had it been within the metro

I seriously thought we were gonna hit the idiot. It was like 1 ambo length between our bus and her car before she took to the ditch. What a dumbass.

Pretty sure it's been shown that police escorts CAUSE many accidents for this very reason.

The way this whole call went is whacked, things are a little messed up in STL?

You can always count on stupid people to do these things just about every day. That's why me driving code and driving normal are just about the same, it's not my emergency.. Driving stupid fast with police escorts seems like a sure way to get smoked, I'm sure you didn't get there any faster..

I thought the speed limit in the rural interstates was 70mph anyway in that area (please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't drive there much).

I think this illustrates how big of a problem is that people don't stop when pulling to the right.

Doesn't surprise me. When people hear sirens, they expect one emergency vehicle, not 2. PD escorts do more harm than good, in my opinion.

One time, we had motorcycle cop riding behind us, and when a few people didn't yield, he went up ahead and stopped 3 people for not yielding :D

Okily dokily. This is why staying calm and driving defensively is good. Why was an escort used? How much time was saved?

There are a lot of things that seem messed up with that call. It sounds very unsafe and honestly hysterical.

We very rarely ever used lights and sirens on the interstate for several reasons:

1. You are traveling faster than the sound carries.

2. You actually slow down traffic and cause more problems...for example when the speed limit is 65 or 70 and you are doing 75 at max, what is the point of interfering with the traffic flow of everyone else who is doing 80+ ?

Caveat is if traffic is backed up due to a crash or rush hour, then yeh you may utilize them; but on a normal traffic day with cars flowing, much safer to forgo them.

I'm trying to figure out why you needed an escort.

Escorts are BAD. More than one flashy siren vehicle travelling in a line confuses drivers.

And don't go code 3 on an interstate. Did they not take EVOC?

So the question begs to be asked...did the woman nearly cause the incident or did the emergency driver?

My vote is the escort.

Hmmm... that's weird. Even before my medical days, I never thought that. Next time I'm at work, I think I'll do a random survey for my own edification.

From the scenario (granted there are two sides to every story), it sound like a common case of "inattentive soccer mom texting/talking while driving a ridiculously oversized vehicle with major blind spots" (yes, I am biased against these morons).

She could next time possibly:

1. put the phone down and drive
2. stop cruising the left lane (it's for passing)
3. pull her head out of her *** and actually use her mirrors

I see emergency vehicles do some dangerous crap on a daily basis. But let's not forget about the hordes of indifferent/clueless idiots that make up the general public (and yes, some of us fit into both categories).

Thing is, it is actually our job to anticipate poor moves and behaviors from the public while driving code. It sucks, I know, but it is our job and our responsibility.

You're going to have to explain that one to me, I thought the speed of sound was somewhere around 700 MPH.

Well, you're the minority, from what I've noticed.

I didn't say faster than the speed of sound, I said faster than it carries.

When you are zooming down an interstate the volume of the siren does not project as far forward as it would if you are moving at a slower pace. It is a simple concept...

You can "outrun" your siren.

Sorry, I have no other way to explain it but any seasoned person who has run down an interstate with a siren in use knows what I am talking about.
