Hey all. Some of the flow is off in this, but I'm working on it...slowly but surely. Any critiques or ideas to make the flow better? I know some of you are fire-fighters... so if there is anything in there that's WAY off from common/standard procedures, please let me know? Thanks!!!

UNTITLED

We both awoke so suddenly
In the middle of the night
You kissed me goodbye and went
To another fire-fight.

I sleepily mumbled, “I love you”
As you headed for the door
If I could have known, dear
I’d have held you forevermore.

The sirens screamed so shrilly
As you hurried to the scene
Of a house that was fully engulfed
Disturbing what had been serene.

You and your partner grabbed the hose
And started for the blaze
Wondering how to best attack
Thinking of the ways.

Inside the beast it was so loud
Although you heard the shout
Of a frightened child
Who wanted to get out.

You motioned to your partner
That you’d control the line
He should take the child out
While there was still time.

As your partner left the house
With the child in his arms
You returned to the task at hand
Of destroying that which harms.

A replacement came to hold the line
As you fought your way in deep
Never could you have ever guessed
Tonight, the Lord your soul would keep.

The second story was weakened
And that was where you went
Not liking the way the floor shifted
As it creaked and slowly bent.

It all happened so suddenly –
The ground beneath you fell
You ended up trapped beneath
In your own personal hell.

Your partner was alright, though
And he crawled towards the door
The last thing that you heard from him
Was “hang on a minute more!”

Again I was awakened
Sweet dreams still in my head
I opened the door to the fire chief
“I’m sorry,” was all he said.

So now I stand here crying
Before your open grave
Looking at your casket
I promise I’ll be brave.

I turn to see your brothers
With their saddened, somber faces
As someone starts speaking
And says the final graces.

They call me forward to accept
A folded flag in your name
I know that you are still with me
But I’ll never be the same.

I know I’ll never forget you
Or the way you held me tight
When you got home, exhausted
After a fire-fight.

I’ll miss the way you smiled
To show me how you cared
And as time slowly marches on
I know that you’ll be there.

So let me say one final thing
And darling, know it’s true –
Even though you’re no longer here
I’ll go on loving you.
