I have been working as an EMT-b in Los Angeles for a few months now for an IFT company. I like Los Angeles but I am working 50-60 hours a week and still cant afford to live in a desireable location.

Pay is similar in LV and cost of living is MUCH lower. I searched "EMT" on indeed but there wasnt much.

Im a single 30yr old male planning to go to Physician Assistant school. I want to live in a good/fun location before I go.

The service out there is ran by AMR you can go to their job site and see if theirs any listings. Be advised, they mostly look for AEMT's. Good luck!

Are there typically any other jobs for EMT's out there? Are there no IFT companies?

My understanding is that AMR and Medic West (which is owned by AMR, but operates as an independent company?) Are the 2 main privates in Vegasdoing transports.

I think 911 units are staffed Paramedic/Intermediate, with Basics running transfers.

But @SandpitMedic seems to be the Vegas expert so anything he says will trump anything I say lol.

There isn't an IFT climate like there is in say, CA, for example. We just don't do that much of it.

AMR/MWA have very few IFT trucks actually.
All units do IFTs if necessary but almost all also run 911. I've been on a dual medic/CCT/sup truck and had BLS transports... no one is immune. There are like 5-10 IFT trucks only. Between the two companies that isn't much. More than likely as a basic you will end up doin special events, night clubs, pool parties, etc.

Community would be the "IFT" company but only for a few hospitals, yet they also have a slice of the primary 911 contract. I am unsure if they hire basics.

Benefits would be no state income tax, cheaper cost of living, and probably around $9-10 starting hourly.

That isn't great, but it's about standard EMT wage anywhere.

Most folks in EMS in Las Vegas are Advanced EMTs (mostly required to run 911 with a few exceptions) and Paramedics.

If your aim is to go to PA school then I would not waste my time on medic school or being a medic for that matter. I would just pursue the PA route if I were you.

I'm kind of in the same boat as the OP, at least in the "I'm planning on moving to Vegas" part. I'm currently a basic in Albuquerque, NM, only been with my company a few months but not planning on moving till next summer (don't want to interrupt kids school year). I'll have my Intermediate/Advanced here shortly, just need my national written test. I am planning on getting my medic, I just want a year or two of AEMT first. Anyway, looks like Vegas has roughly the same pay, cost of living isn't much different, and there's a lot more options for work for my wife. My main concern is availability and type of EMS jobs in the Vegas area. Here in ABQ we have three different companies. One is strictly IFT and is considered, for politeness sake, a less than stellar work enviroment. The company I work for is contracted fro 911 in the city and near surrounding area, but we also get IFT calls. Lastly, we have AMR, which does the far surrounding area 911 calls. I'm just wondering how the system in Vegas works. Full 911, IFT, low priority calls only, that kind of thing. I'm also wondering about job availability. I've seen openings for ambulance companies, but I also see stuff for casinos, ems for large events, stuff like that. Anyone have any info?

No info from me other than AMR/Medic West and Community Ambulance have contracts. But have no idea who has what since every time I go up to LV for vacation, I see both Medic West and Community running in strip.
I do know that AMR was low on employees and having management run calls in units. Seems like jobs are available?

My thread is still going. I know everyone says they mostly hire AEMT and paramedics, but what about intermediate? I heard thats a short course that I may be able to do in the meantime.

It's my understanding that AEMT and Intermediate are the same thing, at least that's how it is in New Mexico. NREMT calls it advanced, some states call it Intermediate. Unless you're talking I-99, but honestly I don't think anyone actually knows what that is, NREMT included. As for the course itself, I highly recommend it. It broadens your scope by a lot, and is a good jumping point if you go to medic. As for class length, my college does basic as one term, intermediate as two terms with the second being only for clinical rotations.

I'm possibly looking to move to Vegas as well. I currently work for AMR here in Houston and we had some crews from Vegas here during hurricane Harvey. One of them said that Medic West and AMR split the strip, but more recently they both have been running all over Vegas and not really keeping it separate. I'm guessing its because of call volume and lack of staffing. I know they don't pay very well out there, but I was told that if I move out there that I would take my current pay that I'm making here and make it there. They also have a $1500 signing bonus and will pay for medic school with the signing of a two year employment contract. cost of living in Vegas is much cheaper than California and cheaper than here which is a big selling point other than wanting to run 911.
From what I hear, medic west has nice equipment and pretty new trucks, which is something AMR H-town does not have.

Does anyone know what schedule they run out there? I neglected to ask that and haven't received a response from their HR. I'm looking at Medic West and not AMR even though they are the same company.
