This post is about how reading these forums can help a newbie and accelerate the learning curve.

Saturday night. Bringing in a patient to the ER. A foreign born man with his wife. Neither speak English. A cluster of people passing a cell phone to get the patient details, all hovering over the poor man.

The triage nurse at the desk calls over and asks "what do you have?"

I suddenly remembered reading a thread about ER's and a triage nurse asked a crowd of EMTs for two words each on what is wrong with his or her patient.

Everyone else was so absorbed with the patient, his wife, the daughter on the cell phone, passing back and forth they did not notice her. But I did.

I said : "head injury, due to fall". Clear calm voice. The nurse nodded and pointed, one of the dudes on our crew said "that was good." It felt like the success of the run boiled down to that moment.

The reality is were two vollie and two hospital ambulances and fire truck that responded. Anyone could have done the size up, interventions and packaging, and had someone not been there

Had I not been trolling this board, I NEVER would have know to do that.

That is it. Flame away.

I never reduce it down that much. The RN needs more detail to know where the pt will go. Was there LOC? Was fall from a cardiac event? Does pt have any other medical problems or injuries? They need that to determine where to place the pt.

The triage nurse seemed satisfied with my answer.

She pointed to us where to take him.

When the team surrounded him, I made a more detailed report to the MD.

I just got a vibe that she just wanted to hear that.

She went up to me later, she thought I was the crew chief.

I'm still trying to decipher why this is post worthy. I don't understand why you told a whole story with the main point being that you spoke a few words to a triage nurse. And that communication made you feel awesome?

I got that he wanted to share he picked something up here that had value to him.

Apparently what he absorbed was something like, in going into the ER make it short and sweet.

That was a thank you.

Chimpie, I only did it cause he asked me to. :)

To me it doesn't sound like its the phrase you said to the nurse that's the big deal, more that you were part of a call and felt like you were part of the team, by the nurses recognition and your partner's compliment. It always feels good to be part of a team, especially a team that's helping people.

Keep on keepin' on.

That one moment of acceptance, which of course will need to be sustained by what I say and do in the future, is what made me feel part of the team. Had I not done what I did I would have just felt like I was tagging along.
