We really are happy to answer your questions, but in many of these cases, our answers will be the exact same. Every service, every region, every state is a little different, and you NEED to research how things are done in your area-- we can't tell you that. We know you are a new FR/fmr. EMT student.
Please, for everyone's sanity, give you local rescue squad a call, track down the SOPs, read your state protocols, and try doing a search here. There was a discussion not a few weeks ago about how call information is relayed to members.
I've seen several types. at the old paid job, each crew member has a voice pager (that makes noise and gives dispatch info), and an alpha pager which follows a minute or two behind and has the same info and cross streets. This is passed on from crew to crew.
at the old volunteer job, duty crew tones are used from 8pm to 6am, for all 2nd calls, rescue assignments, or calls during other hours, all pagers activated, regardless of if there was a crew in quarters or not.
alpha pagers are awesome (I think every unit should have them), but they are rarely as quick to receive information as radios and radio pagers.
