experience helps, and EMTs are a nickel a dozen. paramedics are more in demand, but many places want experience before they will hire you. Working in the hospital can help you network well enough to get a job.

apply everywhere, and if you really want to get into EMS, you might have to move to where the jobs are

I do realize that I'm probably gonna have to move for a job at some point but we do have 3 major companies around here. The job I got is as a tech at the hospital and one of the ambulance companies is pretty close to the hospital (They were one then got split in some sort of deal) So maybe this job will help me get one there after a year.

Would you be able to go over some stuff with me about how I fill out an application or some of the answers I gave in the interviews to try to improve myself and hopefully get a job later

First, click this link and change your username to something anonymous: https://emtlife.com/account/change-username Our forum is heavily crawled by Google your name will eventually show up in search results.

Second, does your resume look like your original post? Misspellings, lack of punctuation and capitalization? Writing is a big part of EMS and if you can't do so properly you won't be able to find a job.

Finally, why do YOU think you didn't get hired?

Check with your local library, community colleges and job and family services agencies for resume review and interview prep.

You may also try to see about getting hired on as a wheelchair chair driver or some other position within the company to get your foot in the door.

Where in western Illinois are you? If you'd rather PM that works for me as well. I was out there for my undergrad. I worked in the area during school and know the systems fairly well!

Done and no my resume is alot more proper, I had it professionally written and proofread. Personally I think it's my job history thats holding me back. I don't think I've worked anywhere over a year(I am young though) but the only reason for that is because of life situations and college that I couldn't avoid, didn't leave any place on bad terms but things came up, good news is that current things look stable. I've started to look at my answers and the way I sat during the interviews too that may have hurt me.

So I'm guessing your three are AMT, Genesis, and MEDIC?

If you're willing to travel a bit, Galesburg has a pretty decent EMS agency (Galesburg Hospitals' Ambulance Service). I've not worked for them, but have many friends who do/did. Contrary to their name, they're an independent EMS agency (501c3) organization. They're "all hazards" (9-1-1 and transfers...both from their hospitals to Peoria/QC/Iowa City, and discharges/convalescent). Perhaps not the most progressive service...but they do have good volume and you will get experience. I bring them up specifically only because it would be a very easy commute, just down 74.

Again if you don't mind traveling a bit, many of the county-based services (on both the Iowa and Illinois) side aren't awful. I know Muscatine Fire hires some EMS-only employees, as does (I believe) Burlington Fire. Geneseo EMS wasn't a bad organization when I was in the area. Maquoketa's operation has decent management from what I've hard.

Yes, I've interviewed at AMT and Genesis, AMT said they didn't have any current positions open at the moment so I'm wondering if my application was lost with them, haven't heard back from genesis so my assumption is they didn't like me and Medic I have no idea, they have a volunteer/PRN for Eldridge and Leclaire that would work out pretty good for me but I'm just trying to get that interview. I am willing to travel but not too far, moneys a little issue especially If I'm trying to take Paramedics in the fall. Galesburg is probably my best bet at the moment, maybe Iowa city even.

Unity Point has an EMS service up in Anamosa that I could possibly transfer to after I get my P license, Working within the company and keeping a good name for myself should make it easy. I have a friend in Missouri in an AMR Region, from what I heard anyone can get hired there so maybe as a last resort I can move down there.
