    Box truck vs moving truck

I'm moving, and I'm terrible with spacial issues. I can't find out how large a typical box ambulance is -- is it the same as a 10 foot moving truck? I'm trying to visualize and I'm fairly sure I could fit a desk, a couch, and a queen-sized bed in the back of a box truck..

    Really Annoyed

I work for a company with divisions in more than one area. I moved from one division to another, but before moving I talked to the HR Representative at the new division and was told that I would keep my same rate of pay (original division had a higher starting rate + I had a raise). Once I...

I don't want to walk through your smoke! =(

Why do so many nursing homes put the ambulance entrance in the back next to the smoking area for staff? I don't want to walk through that cloud and I don't want to pull my patients through it either! Uggg. Whyyyy can't we just use the front door for our non-emergency IFTs?

    Immature EMTs

This is more of a rant than a constructive post. Other EMTs who act like they are too good to help a patient with anything not explicitly in the EMS scope are so annoying. I took a very nice patient home yesterday. He was bedbound and his caregiver wasn't completely mobile either. The...

    How Stressful Is 911?

I've worked IFT for a year & I love it. Occasionally we have 911 roll-over calls, and I find them stressful & unpleasant. I panic, get anxious, forget what to do, etc. Luckily I've had great medic partners who have no problems bossing me around & I retain motor memory, but I'd be extremely...

    Indianapolis

I'm moving to Indy & have a few questions. Anyone who's willing to answer them would get lots of +karma thoughts from me. How is the 911 service structured? Do any of the companies offer part-time or PRN employment? What is Midwest Ambulance like? They seem very professional for a...

    in trouble

Had an MVA pt with minor injuries - sore knee, neck pain - walking around when we pulled on scene. We didn't board or collar her, and I just had a supervisor tell me I could lose my numbers over this. Is that true?

Community college 2 year program Or university pre-medical school science courses + medic mill?

    CE credit for college courses?

As I'm looking over the CE opportunities at my service this month, it occurs to me that I'm learning far more relevant information from my A&P class than I will from taking a hazmat class or being a patient for practicals. Why not offer a certain number of CE credits for EMS workers who earn an...

Is it abandonment to leave a patient at home by themselves?

I work for a private ITF and occasionally we take people back to their residences and leave them alone. Is this legal? My partner told me that it is illegal to leave them at home as we can only leave patients in the care of someone with equal or higher medical training.

    IFT Narrative

I work BLS at an IFT agency. Most people at my agency use simple narratives, ie "Dispatched Code 1 to [hospital]. Pt sheet pulled to strecher. Vitals monitored en route. Sheet pulled to bed. Care given to nursing staff at [nursing home]. EOR." I've been trying to do a bit better and use the...

US Government Considering Technology To Block Cell Phones In Moving Vehicles

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40418794/ns/technology_and_science-wireless I don't know how much 911 services depend on cell phones, but this would make my IFT job much, much more annoying. "Dispatch needs us to call them ASAP; let's pull over and add 10 minutes to our response time."

    what is your company like?

I've been in EMS for a few months and am struck by the difference between the business structure of the IFT company I work for now and the old customer service company that I worked for before, and am wondering if most EMS companies are structured the same why. At the call center, I had a...

    LifeLine Screening?

Does anyone have experience working with this company? They aren't EMS but they hire EMTs/paramedics/CNAs to do basic healthcare screenings. They said that all I need to know how to do is a bp and they will train me to do everything else, but I'm wondering how legit a company that offers...

    Indianapolis/Indiana Wages?

Would anyone be willing to share what they make in Indiana, especially the Indianapolis area? I am thinking of moving there and wondering if the wages are similar. I'm interested in IFT especially. For fairness' sake, I make $10/hr in metro Louisville with sporadic opportunities for overtime.

    Partner Etiquette

If your partner is driving code one to a scheduled IFT and doesn't need help navigating, is it rude to read a book if you're not ignoring them when they talk?

Were your EMT-B class tests Top Secret?

Apparently mine are. We are required to turn in the tests and answer sheets after we review the answers and we aren't allowed to take any notes on the material whatsoever. This is extremely annoying to me as I am a visual learner and going over the questions I missed verbally does nothing for...

    Driving Skills Questions

I am not a very good driver. I'm overly cautious and I have a bad sense of direction. Can I still be an EMT? I know I'll mainly be doing non-critical transport work as a beginner -- is it okay to be overly cautious there? Can I request not driving as a newbie? Will my partner hate me for it? If...

    Questions about Boots

Are there specific types of boots that are designed for EMTs or do people just wear generic work boots? And are there specific attributes that boots need to have? I have a pair of steel-toed "extremely water resistant" 14 eye boots that go about halfway up my calf - would those be acceptable?
