Did a board and collar MVA couple weeks ago when I didn't do my spinal yet because pt cc of back pain. When my volly supervisor found out he wasn't happy about it. Doesn't the spinal go into effect December 1st? Anyway, I did my spinal last week and won't dare the use the board again, unless...
Hey guys one of the NYC hospitals I'm applying to is requiring the following certs:
Weapons of Mass Destruction Certificate (WMD)
Haz-Mat Awareness Certificate
Where do I get the latter? Is the WMD part of the IS-XXX I've been doing previously? Heres a list of my complete IS's:
IS-100...
When I see a line of cars at a red light, I either drive on the opposite lane if its clear, or get behind the lane that has the least amount of cars. Sometimes cars wont move at all. I hate NYC traffic.
I will cycle through all kinds of sirens and sound the horn for about 10-15 seconds with no...
Buffing = Scanning PD/EMS radio and trying to get on scene before 911 ambulance does
NYC EMS guys who buff at volunteer ambulances: I desperately need help on how to buff better. Sure I get tips from guys at the volly but I want to know everything I can about buffing to increase my chances. I...
Anyone tried using a c-collar for sleeping? I'm tempted to try it next time. I hate neck pain from sleeping. I'm considering a J-pillow, but I've lost a pillow before. So why not try something thats already on the truck and disposable...
Anyone here buff calls while working at a private NYC ambulance? I'm curious because I've heard rumours about guys who are doing it at more than one private company. I would like to know about your experiences, if its worth doing, what the risks are, etc. Me personally I know I am SAFEST doing...
Board & Collar for Nursing Home Falls
I notice depending on my partner I'm working with, we will just collar and sometimes we will board and collar. The main indication being if they hit their head. What I do most of the time is just collar if they hit their head. Recently my partner said "If...
If I ever witness an emergency while driving my POV or get flagged down, instead of using hazards, emergency lights would be nice. Are there any laws against this in NYC? As for sirens, I can't anticipate any needs for it. Ok, maybe for rapid txp but shouldn't I wait for an ambulance for that...
I'm considering doing volly work. I already do paid IFT/Txp work currently so I'm debating between doing overtime tours at my present job and doing volly work. My primary outcome is more points on FDNY EMS civil service test or getting hired by a 911 hospital.
Pluses of volly work:
+ Get to...
So I got EMT certified last month. I work at a Skilled Nursing Facility. Been doing so for the last 3 years as CNA for the Rehab Dept. My job is mainly ambulation of pts and I've done some PRN work as regular CNA as well.
I've gotten shoulder surgery a few months ago and still cannot lift heavy...
School told us our state score and emt#. Figure I can't probably work until I have the actual card. Problem is I'm still in post-op shoulder arthroscopy. What should I do if I can't lift yet? Figure I'd volunteer and do dispatch or something. Will that be educational/beneficial at all? Figure...
Had some tears in the rotator cuff. Its been 30ish days since I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery and I'm back to CNA work with limited strength on my right arm. State EMT exam is this thursday and I fear I won't be able to work as an EMT in January. Maybe by late winter/early spring.
Anyone...
What and how much experience do hospitals typically ask for in NYC for EMTs? Is 6 months IFT and some Volunteer work enough? If I don't see job postings online does that mean they are not hiring? Is walking in with a resume talking to a supervisor or HR person better? Does having a referral...
Is it just me or is youtube getting flooded w/ ads for angel med flight? I find it tremendously annoying skipping their ads before watching videos. And do they have no better place to advertise to than youtube users? Because youtube users are going to need flight transport right?
I'm a nursing assistant currently and almost done with EMT school. I'm going to make a similar amount of money if not a tiny cut in pay. I've been working indoors in hospitals for almost 4 years and am just tired of the monotony and boredom of being inside and doing bedside nursing, which is...
I'm at a crossroads. Do I wait for the FDNY medic program, if I even get into FDNY in the first place, 2-3 years from now--or go to medic school out of pocket in 2016. So here's my question:
How necessary is it to master 911 BLS/EMT work before going to medic school?
I've heard guys give...
I've been noticing EMS guys, after dropping off pt at the hospital, spending 20mins or so just killing time before they "green up" and take calls again. Why is this? Maybe I'm a student and never worked calls yet but I can already see myself not wanting to waste time and wanting to take as many...
Trying to get a more clear picture on the differences to affect my decision making. Any help with the accuracy or comparison of this info will be appreciated. Of course, this is only comparing 911 services not including any volunteer, private, or IFT organizations. I'm mostly in the dark about...
I know I don't need NREMT for NYC, just the state and REMAC. But are there any advantages for getting it? Will it look good on my resume and are employers more likely to hire me based on national certification? No substitute for experience of course but any edge I can have I will use.
Thanks guys
I can pick any 2 EMS stations to ride along with. If you've worked in any of these hoods and can let me know which are the best 2 as far as seeing alot of action, traumas, etc. please let me know. Manhattan or Brooklyn only since I'm closer to those areas. Day shifts only unfortunately. No night...
