is getting a mic worth it?

I used to wear shoulder mics during the first few weeks of my career. That ended real quick though because the coiled wire kept getting hung up in everything in the back of the rig(IV Tubing,O2 tubing ect.).

    Gasoline powered Ford E-450

I just wanted to get some feedback on the newer model Ford Gasoline E-450 Ambulances vs the diesel units. I have heard some pros and cons about the gas engines but wanted to get some feedback on here from some folks that have had some experience with them. Our service is supposed to purchase one...

    Polygraph Testing

I can't believe these agencies are actually using Polygraph testing for hiring purposes. It has been proven that these kinds of "lie detector" tests are completely unreliable and CAN be beaten. There is a reason they are not upheld in a court of law.

    Local cop on who's team?

This Town in Particular is so rural with such a small population that you really wouldn't have any problem moving traffic out of the way at that time of the evening is what the mindset is I believe for those responsible for the ordinance. But it would only take one instance of someone getting...

    Local cop on who's team?

This brings up an interesting point. In the Municipality that I work in we have a local village ordinance that prohibits the use of sirens after 11pm so we are limited to using lights only at that point. Of course neither I nor any members of my Department have encountered any legal issues as of...

    surviving a 12hr./24hr.

Lots of time spent on the internet. Trying to sleep but usually an attempt to sleep brings in an unwanted call.

Sound off: Which is worse, New Years Eve or New Years Day.

I worked a 48 beginning at 8am Friday, the 31st and got done on Sunday the 2nd at 8am. Most of my calls were on New years Day. Beginning at around 5:30am Saturday morning I ran a steady flow of calls that didn't stop until 2:30am Sunday morning. I would say at least 2-3 were alcohol related.

    Morphine Administration

My medical control authority just changed it's protocols within the last 2 months to include giving Paramedics the authority to give morphine and Fentanyl pre radio. Since giving the two meds I have seen a lot more success with morphine which is the exact opposite of what I expected.

Is it normal that the closer you are to becoming a Paramedic the more

Yes it is normal. I felt this way when I first started, and no one told me it was normal,in fact I was told the exact opposite by a lot of negative influences which made me feel even worse. Just know that with time you will become more comfortable with yourself and develop your own style,but...

    My Dilemma

I would suggest looking at a part time position at one of the other places if you can find the time. It may not pay very well, but it's only part time and you can keep your full job.

    ER tech vs. EMT

The majority of hospitals in my area will usually hire only a Paramedic for tech position in the ER. The Major level I Trauma center in the area around here actually will only hire a Paramedic who has had at least 2 years road experience, but you also have to consider there are too many...

    IV/Monitor?

I'm going to agree with everyone and say absolutely put him on the monitor and start an IV. Their are very few patients who I don't put on the monitor, and the anxious behavior could quite possibly be early signs of shock.

    I hate those ASPCA comercials

No one ever said anything about harming another person just because they hunt. I think the point is that certain people feel more sorrow for an animal because they are completely defenseless. It doesn't mean that they are a bad person just because they feel this way. I eat meat,I have no problem...

    EZ-IO vs IV

We actually have it in our protocols now to use a lidocain flush if we start an I.O. Our department just got the EZ IO drills in about a year ago and it's only been used once, the biggest reason for this being we are a small department that only averages about 1-3 calls per day. And we have...

    Paramedic Burnout

I have worked the 48's before, bit this last one was just non-stop calls for 2 days straight, and when we weren't running calls it was " go sit point now" away from the station just as I was about to get some sleep or eat a meal. And the calls...ranging from combative drunks to self inflicted GSW...

    Paramedic Burnout

I am a fairly new Paramedic with about 8 months of road experience as full time, and a year as a part time EMT-Basic before that. I work for a service where I do two 24 hour shifts a week, and one 48 a month. I just completed my 48 for the month yesterday and by the end of the shift I was so...

This is really good advice. The part about pulling forward as far as you can is what helped me out in the begining.Once I started doing this,I got much better at backing in.
