If I knew a lawyer that would be a great idea. I may look into seeing if one would be willing to help us out though. Thanks for the idea!

Ground level fall and the Backboard

My department uses an Assesment Based Spinal Immobilization protocol. In which I can determine wheather or not my patient needs immobilized. In this case I would not have backboarded this patient. They did not meet the criteria that is in my protocol.

    Should I switch careers?

I would loook into trying to do a ride along with a service near you. See what the crew goes through on a day to day basis. That way you can get a good idea of what exactly we do and see if it is for your or not. If you enjoyed it then I would recommend looking into a volunteer service to get...

Passed NREMT - Question for next steps

You need to get your state certification card before you can actually work in EMS. At least that is the way it is in Iowa. I would venture to say that it is the same in Kentucky.

    question i had

Thats crazy. Why become a paramedic if you have to have someone looking over your shoulder on every call. Seems like someone in your department really likes to have control.... As for your initial question. O2 is always first.

So I am going to be in charge of teaching a con-ed class for our department next month. I do the CQI for our department and I thought it would only be fitting if I went over documentation. So my question to you is. Do any of you guys, in the states, have any good resources that you could...

Accuracy/reliability - Manual BP vs. Automated.

You can never be 100% sure. But the age old adage has always been, Treat your patient and not the machine. This doesn't work for all cases but if you get a manual BP of 128/82 initially. And then with no change in your patient condition what so ever, 10 minutes later while driving to the...

Accuracy/reliability - Manual BP vs. Automated.

I will always take a manual BP initially to get a baseline for my patient. If I have a long transport time I will use my LP12 BP after the initial manual BP. That way I know if the automated one is giving me some crazy number.

    IN Fentanyl and no IV

We have recently adopted new protocols that allow for our Paramedics to give Fentanyl IN in the field. We mainly use it for pediatric isolated orthopedic injuries. It really helps so you don't have to give the kiddo a needle stick. We also use it for adults but not nearly as much.
