    allergy to non-latex gloves

I've only had one shift, and used a combo of vinyl and Nitrile gloves. I noticed a rash of small red dots on the back of my hands during the day. It never itched, nor did I feel any breathing difficulty, but it worried me. I noticed it first after using the nitrile, which is what my company...

    First day

Yesterday I had my first shift; 16 hours as a third rider with a bls crew. We had 7 patients and 3 were emergency calls. I had numerous opportunities to practice my skills during the day and everyone was supportive and encouraging. The capper was a call an hour before I was to leave. My crew...

    Got my license

I passed the state and I now have my EMT-B license! By now though I have learned that the true test lies ahead of me and I am terrified and excited all at once. This week I shall begin the job search. I plan to post and be involved more once in the field, as I feel I will have more to...

    Drug tests

I hang out with friends who occasionally smoke marijuana. Those days are behind me, yet I wonder about upcoming drug tests when I apply for an EMT-B position. What's the possibility of failing a drug test from being in a room where folks are smoking pot?

    First ride along

It was fun! I spent much of the time waiting for something to happen, but according to the folks at this ambulance company, it was "unusually slow." I was scheduled with a BLS crew, but the Paramedic in charge declared I would go with the first crew that got a call. 20 minutes before it was time...

    Learning med/trauma assessments

And wanted to vent a bit about how overwhelming it seems. Obviously, I know logically that its new and only seems complicated because of its newness, but this is the first skill that I have felt my head swim at. We are learning them along with the assessment trauma stations from our state test...

    Those who persevere

Just sitting in class the other night and wondered how many of the 36 folks in my class will end up having a career in EMS for say, 3 years. Or 5 years, 10, 20? Anyone have any knowledge or ideas on statistically what percentage of those who take an -B course stay in the field...thanks in advance

    NREMT and me...

I have read a bunch of posts about national and state licensing, as well as some threads pertaining to my state, Massachusetts, and it's licensing/reciprocity rules. My question is this: Other than being able to work across state lines, is there any benefit to being licensed by my state and...
