To become an EMT B do you need to pass a practical exam or only the writen?

Can some one list what a new EMT might need to buy to be the best he/she can be. I would like to know every thing from the best clothing to the best gadgets to make your job just a bit easer.

What kind of 2 ways do you use; I know it may very from state to state. Do you guys use uhf radios? Vhf radios? Or something else? Thanks in advance!

I was in the ER last night :( for asthma (I am home and ok) and over heard some EMTs talking, saying "most EMTs drive SUVs because they are used to driving ambulances which are also high up" Do you find this to be true? What kind of car do you all drive?

I am in training to be an EMT. Can some one please explain to me what some of the differences of the titles? (EMT-1, EMT-2/3, EMT-B EMT-Paramedic) and what they can or can't do? Thanks for your help. (Sorry that was hard to write)
