Want to support women in EMS? Paint an ambulance pink.

That's pretty much how my wife, a former EMT, feels -- except that pink is her favorite color.

Want to support women in EMS? Paint an ambulance pink.

FWIW, the comments I saw on FB from female EMS personnel were mostly negative.

I am new here! I have a question about getting into this career...

Nebula77, there's nothing to apologize for. I just wanted to see where your head is at. As Peak said, EMT pay is pretty pitiful, so doing that full time would likely require careful budgeting and maybe cutting back on whatever lifestyle you're accustomed to. Doing EMS part time while you keep...

I am new here! I have a question about getting into this career...

Nebula77, how about I dodge the porn issue and just ask you a couple of unrelated questions: Are you saying you want to become a career EMT, as opposed to starting as an EMT and pursuing further training? What don't you like about running the business you started? What convinced you to get a...

How do you deal with suicide calls when you have experienced if firsthand?

Glad to hear that, Sarah. So let me just add a positive spin to the other worthwhile feedback you've gotten: The tragedy you experienced may help you become a better caregiver. I used to ride with an EMT who had a seizure disorder. No matter how much I learned in paramedic school about...

How do you deal with suicide calls when you have experienced if firsthand?

Put aside the question about EMS for the moment. How are YOU doing? You sound like you're still very much affected by your brother's death. It must be terribly hard to handle something like that on your own. Do you still try to hurt yourself, or even think about doing so?

Thinking about a return to EMS. Wanted to get some input.

GooMan, I think we covered the alcoholism part in your first post. Let's talk about the anxiety part. I disagree that a "true test" of handling anxiety in the field is a family member's illness -- your grandmother, in this case. When I think back to anxiety I felt at the beginning of my EMS...

    Chance me: criminal history

Others with criminal histories have found jobs in EMS. Don't lie when you're answering interview or application questions, but don't feel that you have to answer questions that aren't asked. You don't have to justify your plans to anyone here, but I do suggest you consider whether EMS...

How to become the best basic

Impress with actions, not words. Show up on time, ready to work. Don't criticize anyone who's not there. Know how to lift safely. Be curious about what you don't know; know what you're supposed to know. Compromise to work well with others. Be nice.

    Drug screening? Adderall as Cocain?

Exitloy, there wasn't much time between the 28th and the 4th. Maybe a decision hasn't been made yet. The more you tell us about this, the more I think you should just call them and ask about your status so you can stop wondering. If they give you a hard time for following up...well, you're...

    Drug screening? Adderall as Cocain?

Exitloy, maybe you should ask them -- nicely -- why you didn't get the job. Perhaps they'll give you an answer that is both honest and helpful.

    Night Shifts

Depends where you work, but if you're categorically opposed to overnight shifts, your options in EMS will be more limited.

Fire51, EMSWorld.com is running a series called State Department. They cover lifestyle and business issues for one state per month. That might give you some ideas.

    Social Media Advice

I think the most important part is what you said at the end: that the whole situation could have been avoided if those pictures weren't posted. As others have pointed out, being aware of possible consequences and behaving prudently is more important than exercising the privilege to post. Each...

    Social Media Advice

Yes, opinions are forms of bias, but I don't think opinions themselves are the problem with social media posts. I think the problem is the way some people express their opinions and dispute other people's opinions. We have plenty of choices about which words to use. I don't think we should...

    Social Media Advice

He has a point of view he's trying to express. He's using a hypothetical example to do that. I guess you could say anyone with an opinion is showing bias.

    Social Media Advice

I'd just add that people representing themselves in environments shared by prospective employers or clients should carefully choose their words, photos, biographical details, etc. The conclusions reached by audiences aren't always fair, but they can and do affect careers -- sometimes in subtle ways.
