Should observing an autopsy be required?

This type of thing sounds like more of a desensitization exercise than a learning one. What possible use could it serve? Even a cadaver lab is outside the EMT scope. Time far better spent in clinical rotations where care is being given.

Do we have a responsibility to share potential fees with patients?

Fees mean nothing in medical care. A $1000 ambulance bill is one thing to a 70 yo with Medicare, another to a 45 year old with one of the Blues and another to the 24 year old with Medicaid or nothing. If someone is dialed in enough to be concerned about the ambulance bill, they should know that...

Do we have a responsibility to share potential fees with patients?

The American Hospital Association and the US Congress haven't come up with anything they can agree on, so there won't be a solution here. At the end of the day consumers have a choice...accept the fees, shop around, or pay on time like folks do with everything else in their lives. The Atlantic...

Do we have a responsibility to share potential fees with patients?

The time to ask/tell about fees/billing isn't when you need the services. If folks are sincerely concerned/interested they should be having the conversation with billing/financial depts during business hours over the phone. Additionally there are stupid cheap "memberships" that systems may offer...

Cops and former cops: do you like EMS better?

Way more different jobs in LE than EMS, retirement in a non-FD EMS isn't in the same zip code as LE, and as long as cops actually live an active life outside of LE when they're off duty & don't go from the couch to patrol and back, longevity in the job can be well into the 2 decade + range...

Come as close as you can to maxing out your contributions. The payoff there (as opposed to a 401k) is that you're not assessed any penalty if you take money out before you're 59 and a half like the 401K. Really nice deal for "early" retirement.

I'd say that there are a ton of people on this board that are in their 20's...If they started to plow money into just an IRA right now (whatever "plowing" is to them) they wouldn't have to worry about life after EMS. Throw in even a modest 401k or 403b and union or no....there's your retirement...

    Coronavirus Discussion Thread

My point was not that there is not a public health crisis....the point I was trying to make (poorly apparently) was that a major news organization was taking a meaningless statistic and applying it across a state of 40 million people with wildly varying demographics and population densities and...

    Coronavirus Discussion Thread

Heard on ABC news on Christmas Eve that 30% of ICU's in California are at 80% capacity...I'm thinking to myself that is pretty darn good for any year in December let alone during a public heath crisis. But of course it was pitched as confirmation of a worsening situation.

    COVID VACCINE

There is major moral concern that a lot of people may have to violate their consciences to receive the vaccine because of the ethically problematic use of aborted fetal cell lines used in production of the AstraZeneca vaccine and in testing of the other 2. That you may not share that concern...

    COVID VACCINE

That so? What is the distinction between 'first time' and 'new' and 'experimental use' of known agents used for several years (at least) for disease processes other than C-19? I would suggest that mRNA vaccines and use of known agents used in other dz processes are not even in the same zip code.....
