    EMS Abbreviations

I am still learning many abbreviations that I didn't know existed, but this is a pretty humorous look at some abbreviations. From an article by Kelly Grayson; Ambulance Driver, found HERE.

Nationally Registered, but waiting on the state...

Ultimately, it's up to the department. I'm in NJ for 5 months out of the year and the squad took my national registry. I have no idea whether they can legally do that, but nobody has told me otherwise. I would make sure you have state certification, just to be sure you don't get into any legal...

    Ambulance gets into a accident?

Just to clarify with everyone, I'm not a driver so you don't have to worry. And I won't be for another 2 years. I also just got certified last month. I'm sure they probably go over something like that in whatever emergency driver training or what not. And I knew that fleeing from an accident is...

    Ambulance gets into a accident?

Alright so I had a thought today. What if you're driving a patient to the hospital and you hit a car. The ambulance barely gets any impact and you're crew and the patient are all fine, but the person you hit had rolled over or has some other severe MOI. What is the correct way to go about this...

Dumbest thing heard on the radio

-Attention ********* First Aid squad, request for an ambulance at ** Willow Drive for a female patient with a mouth issue. -**50 to Dispatch who reported the call in? -Dispatch to **50, The husband called 911 ... Any alarms going off about that call?

    clinicals

Your probably right. On my clinical time I never really got any codes or unstable pt's or anything to help out with. You should have your CPR card at least when you do hospital time so if they need someone to ventilate/do CPR, you're at the bottom of the ladder,

    Boobs and the 12 lead

That's interesting you say that, because the medics in my area have a kit that pretty much resembles a tackle box for all of their IV supplies and meds...

Things you would like to do to your rig but would never get away with

We've got stryker pros on all of our ambulances. Even if the battery dies, they still work.

    flirting with ER staff

I wouldn't ever do that. The problem is that you work with them and flirting with co-workers usually isn't a good idea...

Things you would like to do to your rig but would never get away with

we've already got those front bumper bar things... I'd like to put a stripper pole in the back. That would be very handy. Maybe a mini-fridge too.

    cameras in trucks?

There is nothing about it in my squad's by-laws/protocols. I will of course be courteous as to not take pictures of the patient or the license plate. If I can't get a picture without the license plate, I will be sure to block it out and delete the original. My instructor likes to incorporate new...

    CA EMT changes?

There are supposedly changes being made everywhere for basics. There are rumours going around about being about to test blood sugar, being allowed to intubate, etc. There is nothing definitive yet, but I would hope there will be some formal announcement about it before the end of this year.

    Starting a College EMS Service

I actually am at a college in Connecticut that we set up our EMS Club on campus a few years back. You pretty much have to start small. You know once you set up the club, have a few programs to raise awareness. You can have informational tables, give basic instructions for emergencies, sell first...

    Question

Physics is a good way to understand what happens in a car accident, falls, etc. The three newton's laws apply. There is also gravity and how it can affect some organs. For instance, when you transport a pregnant female supine, you risk the weight of the baby pressing down the lower portion...

    Mass Casualty Units

I agree with some of what you are saying. After looking at it in person, it does seem quite small inside. It is difficult to walk around the bus with other people, plus you have really bad access of the patient on the bottom bunk. I don't know how practical these things would be in a MCI, but...

You know it is going to be a bad day...

Did they have basics closer to the patient being dispatched as well? The medics in my county are all based out of the hospitals and sometimes the closest medic is 25 minutes away.

    clinicals

There really isn't much to it. See if the ER tech or whoever you're shadowing needs any help. If there are any trauma calls that come in, see if you can observe their treatment. If you think you need any reinforcement on medical assessments, go around and see if you can do a few. I was required...

New Study, Don't delay Defib for CPR

The brain starts to be severely damaged after 4-6 minutes without oxygen. Organs probably start dying before then, no? I imagine if you get on scene and nobody is doing CPR have your partner start CPR while you get out the AED.

    First fatality

Talk to your captain or EMD. He/She should be able to arrange for a CISD. It's suppose to be a way to vent about how you feel. The captain should be there and a professional or therapist should be too. Maybe a few other people if you feel are needed.
