FIRST DAY OF EMT CLASS STARTS TOMOROW

Hey all ! so first day of EMT class starts tomo night:) excited, nervous, excited, nervous!!:)

its the Upstate class at East Syracuse, NY Fire Dept. in case anyone else who happens to be taking that class read this too

I spent a short stint at DeWitt FD.... Looking back, and after speaking to Chris S (who apparently is now a ESFD chief officer), I should have applied to East Syracuse FD instead, as I have heard nothing but positive things about that department.

If you are looking to get into EMS, I would also apply to NAVAC. When I was there (almost 15 years ago), I was super impressed by their operation and the attitudes of all their staff.

I left upstate NY in Dec 2003, worked at the Carrier Dome EMS for about a year and a half before i left, and then went back to NJ, spending about 10 years in the NJ EMS system.

when I was there, CNY didn't pay their EMS personnel very well, all the senior paramedics were leaving rural/metro for career FF/PM jobs (which ran the EMS system for Syracuse, and was where every new EMS provider worked to gain experience), and it was too snowy and overcast for me to stay. I'm now down in NC working FT in the private sector and PT on a county fire department as a FF/EMT.

BTW, i took my written exam in Rochester too, because Syracuse didn't offer on the spot grading. it was well worth the extra money and travel to get your results immediately.

In all honesty NYS didn't take very long for me to get my results. they say 3-6 weeks, i think i got mine in 10. with 1 phone call asking status on day 8.

@VentMonkey thank you very much i am glad to have a source here to ask question as they arise!!! and 2nd day of class went well im ready to start doing hands on stuff, we are still in lecture. @NysEms2117 I know i will want to know asap if i passed so I signed up to take the test at Onsite in Rochester and find out immediately :)

Passed NREMT first go... I'm dropping applications everywhere I can. Had 2 interviews with privates in my state already but pay and career aren't great here unless you go fire..

Have an interview in March in Delaware and I'm getting my prints done this week to finish my Texas reciprocity app and keeping fingers crossed some of the departments I applied to start calling back.

If you haven't been to school in a while, or aren't familiar with medical terminology then you may find it challenging. hang in there! study every chance you get!

Hope its going well and that you have as much fun with it as I did with my own class! If you study regularly you'll be perfectly fine!

I have been working in dr's offices for the past 8 years and I did take a medical terminology class a few years ago so I am actually doing fine with that stuff!!:)

I am actually having a lot of fun, I look forward to class and the people in my class are a mixture which is great everyone I have met so far are wonderful. We got CPR certified this past weekend(which I already was but it was cool to actually learn from paramedics not just a American Heart Instructor) and today are working on airway management labs....

Good luck! The only advice I have is to read the book; it's not hard to pass the class, but you'll make a better EMT with the greater knowledge
