Had my first medic class today and they said that they are starting to do cadaver labs with their paramedic classes now. I'm pretty excited about doing this. They aren't requiring that you have to do them, because "Some people just cant handle it." Personally I think they should require everyone to do this in class. It will be great for A&P as well as doing hands on practice stuff.

I was wondering if anyone else went through medic school and got to do this?

Yep, sure did. My class had two cadaver labs and a live porcine profusion lab. Once everyone got over the whole "cute little piggies are alive now and will be dead when we're finished" cry-fest, it turned out to be one of the best parts of my class. Personally, I love a great spare rib, so I wasn't affected by the whole killing pigs issue. That activity along with a 24 hour clinical rotation in the cardiac cath lab helped really cement cardiology.

My favorite part of my class is still, and will always be, the physician mentor rotation. It was invaluable getting to shadow ER physicians and be able to ask them questions and learn from them. That was the pinnacle of my entire experience in EMS.

I got to with my school, definitely a cool deal to be part of. They let us do absolutely anything with the bodies we wanted to as long as we stayed respectful. I think my favorite things were seing the atherosclerosis and the brain with the attached nerves and being able to look through the base of the skull into the spinal column...

I would love to get to do it again, i would just remember to bring the vix vapor rub next time, the smell isnt to pleasant.

My program is, we will be the first class in the program to participate in the lab. We're "guaranteed" at least 10 tubes, 1 cric, and 1 chest decompression.

That is fantastic! This is an opportunity that few at the undergraduate level get. Don't forget to check out my cadaver dissection video post here on the site.

Did it that first day you posted them.

They said one of the days, they are going to try and have a surgeon come with us to basically dissect everything. Cant really beat that for A&P, much better then pictures in a book.

Same here I think practice tubes on cadavers will be much much better then manicans. Instructor also said they would show us how to do chest tubes and other things, even though we don't really do them.

I was looking forward to this class the way it was this just made it better.

Yeah, Ive been in a cadaver lab before in high school. Didn't think it was too bad. Last time I was in a lab I got to hold the brain and spinal cord. Definitely cool stuff to seed first hand.

No wonder the price has gone skyward.

In nursing college we visited the cadaver lab, but our physical exam class was the same as the medical students. Worked out fine for me. Cadavers were brownish, stiff, and had formalin which I had some sort of reaction too and started coughing.
