Greetings,

I am currently an EMT student and was curious if there are any Phoenix area agencies that allow ride alongs or shadowing? I have my Level One DPS fingerprint card and have my clinicals established next month.
I am a retired Air Force firefighter/EMT and currently volunteer for Mesa CERT. I have made the wise decision to rejoin the ranks of EMS, but need to know if there are legal or liability issues that prevent shadowing or ride alongs in the area. Thanks so much!!

I run a lot with Wittmann fire. Phoenix is normally happy to have people. Buckeye has had me once and I've had a couple Maricopa city guys try to get me to go out with them.
As far as ambo's, PMT runs in the east valley, southwest most of the west and rural/ metro for the rest. They're all the same company and I know you can go with Southwest, so I'm sure you could with any of them. I'm not sure if Southwest or Rural runs Mesa, but they're the same company, like I said.
Edit: After looking it up, it seems people have problems getting a ride with PMT/ SW. Can't find anything on Rural Metro. You could try Lifeline in the north part of the valley. They run Wickenburg- Prescott. Bit of a drive, but if they let you...
We were encouraged to go with SW during my EMT classes, so that's kind of odd...

Thank you

I commute 70 miles per day for work, so I am open to driving anywhere for the experience. I emailed Rural and then contacted a CERT instructor to put some feelers out there. I appreciate the help! Pretty excited to get back out there, even if only for shadowing.

No problem at all.
If you wouldn't mind, would you actually post back if any ambos let you go with them? I'd be interested in it to have a bit more 911 experience before my clinicals in a month or two.

Update

I was able to get ride along with Mesa Fire. I called and talked with our program coordinator and I found out they have unlimited ride alongs. For non CERT, you can get two per year. It is as an observer only, but this will help with watching patient assessment, since it has been awhile since I rode rescue units and ran on medical calls. If you have the CERT out there, I would suggest the program. With your experience, you would make a great addition. They could use you in search and rescue and triage.
Finally, I did email Rural/Southwest and hope to hear back from them as well. If you hear of any other organizations, let me know. Driving is no problem with me. Thanks again!!!

Rural/Southwest is a "No Go"

I got a call back and due to liability issues, Rural/Southwest does not allow ride alongs. Shucks. I was hoping to see those guys in action.
