Hello everyone. As the thread title says, I'm strongly considering a EMT-B certification from the local community college. Or was, until I came across this forum. Now I'm not so sure.

I've visited a few forums (here, somethingawful) that have large numbers of EMTs from across the US/world. The consensus seems to be that the job is mentally demanding, doesn't pay a ton, and isn't the glamor you see on TV. None of this took me by surprise, but reading first-hand accounts and experiences put a healthy dose of reality to all of this.

What took me by surprise is the vitriol towards the profession that I've seen in some of the threads here. Is EMS (especially in the Dayton area) really so terrible? Am I better off continuing to cook barbecue for no (worthwhile) benefits and $10.50 an hour?

I'm creating this thread in search of opinions on the EMT field, especially in regard to my circumstances and location, and I'd appreciate any insight you all can provide. Clearly there are many people on here with a lot of life and EMS experience, and what I'm especially looking for is whether the most negative posts were the exception or the majority view.

Thanks in advance for your time.

We complain, but the vast majority of us on this forum are still involved in EMS on some level. It seems you've already noticed a few important points regarding this profession. Yes, the pay can be poor , the demands high, turnover frequent, and hours long, but there are certainly benefits to doing this job! I wouldn't classify it as glamorous in any sense, but I find a lot of satisfaction in my job. In the service I work for, I'm able to make a decent living, I get along with my coworkers, and I love coming in contact with patients that I can make feel better. Most satisfaction in EMS comes from having realistic expectations regarding the job and doing what you can with a smile. The vast majority of what we do certainly isn't true "Emergency Medicine." We do have the opportunity to provide a fair amount of medicine that makes people more comfortable though, and every shift gives us a chance to provide the all important "S" from EMS. Recognize that this is a customer service oriented job that lets us help people feel better at difficult times in their lives and have occasional moments where you actually use what you learned, and you'll be fine. Best of luck!

While we are not the best paid, or as well respect as our police and FD brothers, it can and is a great field to work in. I have been working ems for 5 years, started as a basic and worked up to a medic. It is hands down the best job I have ever had, it gives me the ability to help people on a daily basis. Yes there are some downsides, you will see things no one should ever have to see, you will more than likely work long hours, be yelled out, but will also be able to see the relief and gratitude on patients faces when you save them or their loved one. I say try it out, only way to see if it is for you
