Online and your job

I'm new to EMS, recently joined my local Vol.EMS and starting EMT school as of tomorrow evening.I'm 16 so this is a big step for me.However I have a question in regards to people online and my job.I have some online friends from forums just like this and some video games forums .ect. I've mentioned to them that I'm going to be busy with school .ect but if they ask, where and what department I work for, am I required by law to state my department or can I simply ignore there question and explain that I do not give out that information.I'm one of those people who don't just freely expel my info for others to freely see just because there curious and eager to know as I do not personally know them.

Any help on what I should do would be greatly appreciated.

Online you have absolutely no obligation to give out any personal information. In fact, anything you put online you do so at your own risk.

On a scene, it would most likely be really easy to figure out what department you are with, because its usually plastered all over the fire apparatus, ambulances, and employees.
 
Why would there being a law saying you have to answer a question asked by a random person on the internet?
 
A little anonymity online is not only legally permitted, but encouraged by many.

you are under no legal obligation to reveal anything about you to anyone online, unless I'm the one asking, than you must answer every question both truthfully and honestly, under penalty of me calling your mother if you don't.
 
You're asking if you have to divulge private information to strangers on the Internet.... And you think you're mature enough for EMS, where not only will you deal with death, but can potentially kill?


Finish highschool, finish college, then think about coming back. You're clearly not at a mature enough level for it yet.

The only stupid question is the one not asked, this person seems to be truly concerned about any type of laws dealing with this topic, I'm sure this person learned in EMT class he will be dealing with death among other unpleasant things. I find it very interesting you are going to judge another person based on one post on a open forum where he/she was asking for an honest answer.

I was really trying not be this harsh....but I have to agree.

Common sense isn't so common anymore.

The reason I have asked this question isn't because I am not mature enough, its because I have yet to learn the rules and regulations of being an EMT.I know I'll be dealing with some pretty bad things but, This is something I'm serious about.Not a job I'm doing because i want to look cool in a uniform, but to serve my community and help people who cannot help themselves but to call for us to help them.I haven't gone to EMT school yet.I start tomorrow.I have passed a Ride along to prove I'm mentally and physically able to handle calls in which I performed perfect I was told.My EMS said they think I'd fit in perfect so don't take the question the wrong way.I'm an A and B student in all my classes.The question was simply asked because I am new to all this,It's my first job and I love it. most of your here are probably well beyond experienced in the medical field.

Also,This question was made because from what I've seen online,A police officer must provide a name and dept. for which they work for if someone ever asked for it for whatever reason otherwise they can be fired.This is why I asked here to see if this also applies to anyone belonging to a EMS.

As stated before.I'm not an EMT yet.I'm only just starting training so please don't go crazy on my question.I have yet to learn all this.

The police officer thing honestly sounds like BS, I can't imagine a state having a law like that. What would the purpose be? All of the company/department internet policies I'm familar with say not to do things that make you employer look bad and if you post on forums/blogs/whatever you need to have a disclosure saying your opinions are your own and do not represent your employer. That rule commonly applies to letters to the editor and stuff like that also.
 
Your friends on the other boards told you this. They dont work in the field so take it with a grain of salt. It would be like coming on here and asking for info about your computer when you can go to a forum full of Microsoft employees. I doubt the law about having to provide a badge number and name over the net. If they had to do that there would be no undercover cops. There are some brash people on this forum, Just use it as a way to grow tough skin. What you experience here will be a drop in the pocket compared to some of the people on the streets. There will always be positive and negative advice and views. Dont let that hold you back from coming in here to ask. Its better to catch some flack and get the info you need then to walk around misinformed.

From where I read online it said it really depends on the departments policy, some require they identify themselves if asked and some don't.That's according to online.This may or may not be true but I have no clue.Sometimes stuff online isn't always correct, everyone always has a different answer.


But thanks to all who replied in here to help me get a better understanding on how the online stuff works.It helped !
And for those of you who gave some tips and advice I'll keep it in mind.

Don't forget...some agencies have been known to demand that an applicant provide them their log in credentials for various social networking sites as part of their background check. I believe that issue is still working it's way through the courts.
