Hey there,
I'm new to this forum stuff so any help would really be appreciated... I live in Fort Worth, TX and recently got certified as an EMT-B. Now I really dont know what to do next. Most of the ambulance is run by Medstar here and I have applied for CareFlite ground Transfer Services. I have no experience so I realize it is going to be hard to find a job in this career.. Any one know if I should keep applying to those services or is there other opportunities for EMT-B's to get experience?

MedStar is pretty full up on EMTs right now, so no luck there.

CareFlite doesn't currently have EMT positions it's advertising, but it IS looking for transport/ facility liaisons, with minimum qualifications being EMT. Give that a shot as it's a food in the door.

There are other agencies in the DFW area that do transports that typically always are looking... MedicOne, Guardian, LoneStar, AMR, TLC. Just gotta search around.

Alright definitely will do, thank you. Is there one that you recommend better than others. I have seen mixed thoughts like some people say 911 services are better than transfer and vice-versa.

Well 911 Vs transfer is personal taste, I know medics who prefer transfers and medics like myself who thrive in 911, just a matter of opinion really. Careflite isn't hiring any facility liasons right now, nor EMT's until they find slots for the latest round of new hires. Keep the application in though and ask in a month or two.

There are a lot of smaller private companies that are always hiring, the pay may not be as good as say Careflite, but they would help you get your foot in the door. Without the red patch it is tougher to find a 911 or higher paying IFT slot without experience.

And of the private services I recommend LoneStar, quite a few friends of mine work there and seem to be happy.

I have a few former medic classmates at Lonestar as well and they appear to love it.

As for 911 vs transfer.... 911 essentially IS tranfer, just typically with less pre-gathered information and more random people screaming for no apparent reason.

My service is hiring, but I'll give you the caveat that we're in what in sports would be termed "a rebuilding year". That said, it does appear to be changing for the better.

I did 8 years of almost exclusively 911 before going to work where I'm at now. I more consistently see sick patients here. I have a feeling way too many people write off IFT patients as "just gomers" and don't see how sick they often are.

I've been looking for almost a year. Neither AMR in Arlington nor Medstar has posted any EMT-B jobs that I'm aware of, unfortunately. Most of my apps have been at hospitals, though, since I really need their benefit package (educational). Once again, they want experience at this time so that's been a futile search. I've had one phone interview and one face to face. The face to face didn't go horrible but didn't go well, either. Partially, I'm to blame since I've not interviewed for a job in over ten years and I'm positive I made mistakes. The phone interviewer flat told me I didn't have the experience they needed so it would be doubtful I'd get face time. I've put in countless applications and received and equal number of rejections. To say it's frustrating is an understatement. Two college degree's and multiple certifications, including the EMT-B and I'm pushing carts at a retailer part time but it is, what it is.

Does Lonestar Ambulance have a website or do we need to hand deliver our resume's? I did a search for them but didn't come up with much.

Will be looking into going back for my paramedic cert next week since the EMT-B isn't looking like it will be productive in the near future.

UNTMatt, I don't think LoneStar has a website. May I ask why you limited your search to AMR Arlington and MedStar?

Since they are busy 911 systems, I figured those would at least get me enough experience to get hired on at a hospital. They are also reasonably close to where we live. Most of my apps have been at hospitals around the metromess and with the health system in Denton.

The goal is either trauma nurse or flight nurse but I'm already tapped on school loans for my current bachelor's degree so I need the educational benefits of a hospital to get my BSN.

Linuss is right. Get your foot in the door and just keep your eyes peeled for the next round of hirings. Careflight operates Johnson Co. 911, so you might check that out as well. Also, last I heard, Acadian is hiring in Denton.

CF 911 is tough to break in to, have to put time in with the IFT divisions before you can apply to transfer to 911, especially as an EMT.

Well, the way things are going at Careflight... any ambulance may be hard to get on.
