Wondering if I can get some advice on passing the Paramedic test. This past week I just failed my 4th try on National Registry. (yes, 4 and I had to take a online refresher prior). I thought I had this one locked up. Studied till I could study no more but I feel when I'm in there I tense up and my answers are stupid. I must read into the questions or just blank out and start to guess. Previously I had taken practice quizes online and even have some paramedic tests from prior schools. I see a tutoring E44 out online. Anyone have any feedback on them?
Thanks.

Well.... oxygen... oxygen.... and oxygen. If oxygen is in the answer, pick it.

5 times a charm... Hate to be the a hole, but maybe this isn't for you. Are you a basic or an intermediate? And for how long?

That is what keeps going thru my mind.
Background - I'm not in my 20's, I'm older with a great job already in the non-Paramedic field. Got a taste as a 1st Responder in our community and then my service put me thru Basic. Did that for 2 years and really yearned to make the next step. I absolutely love EMT work, so much I consider quitting my very good paying day job. People I work with keep saying I will make a great paramedic. Passed my course with a B and my instructor offered to hire me. I know this stuff.....I do. My confidence level is down to nothing at this 4th attempt when I thought for sure I had it.

What kind of a student were you before your paramedic course? Have you had problems taking tests before? What have you been doing right before you take the NREMT test -- sleeping, eating, medicating, etc? Over what period of time have you had those four failures?

What service are you using for test prep? JB Learning is excellent. The format mimics the CBT and helps with critical thinking in test taking.

Medictests.com is also a good one.

I was top in my class in high school but that was a long time ago. EMT I was 1 point below an A. The first test, I worked my other job in the am and drove 100 miles to take the test. Got there an hour early and studied in the library. Second test, I studied the morning before and did not work. Third test, I did not study like the other two. Went over some things but that was it. Fourth test, the test was 100 miles away again, stayed with my best friend the night before, we did dinner and went to bed by 10. Took a practice exam before bed and took the test the next morning. I have tried I feel everything different. Am I missing something? From the 1st test to the 4th test I have remembered millions of things......
I just feel down I guess and wondering why I'm putting myself thru this and should I continue? I love doing this but my mental capacity is to a breaking point.
FYI - I'm also a mom with 2 grade school boys and run a household with bills, cleaning, laundry, etc

DEMEDIC - using parameducators.com. Also have some practice tests from the final exam from a different college class that someone got ahold of.

being a mom and having household tasks plus a full time job and school is taxing.

OTOH, do you know your weak spots? as far as what subjects you were having difficulty on?

The biggest thing when it comes to the NREMT exams is forget what you learned and follow the flow chart. what works in the field isn't what works in the NREMT exam

Second read the question completely, read all the answers and choose the Best answer.

I'll cite a post I made a while back about multiple choice.

first eliminate obvious no's, then look at the other three answers if there is 2 correct answers use the one that seems more right

You are dispatched to a restaurant for a 24 yr old male experiencing a allergic reaction. You arrive on location to find a male sitting at a table stating he has came into contact with shellfish which he is allergic to. He is presenting with signs of obvious respiratory distress and has audible stridor as he tries to tell you what happened. Your first action should be?

A) Apply Hi Flow 02 via NRB Mask
B) Listen to Lung Sounds and Get Baseline Vitals
C) Insert a Airway Adjunct
D) Contact Medical Command

Use logic, You just got on scene. and just greeted your patient in the scenario he tells his story. You notice the obvious respiratory distress and signs of allergic reaction. As the patient tells you he contacted shell fish.

So Putting an Airway Adjunct is Out.. he is conscious and talking to you barely but talking to you so he has an airway at this moment in time

Contact Medical command? what are they gonna tell you to do if you do not have any idea whats going on other than what the patient told you. The scenario says no vitals or assessment performed. So that's out.

Listen to lung sounds and get vitals, or Apply hi flow 02 is your only options left. Well you can get a set of vitals initially to see how your pt is presenting and such. But if he is having difficulty breathing we would want to correct that first. So lets go with the Hi Flow 02. And load this pt up so we can get moving and get vitals as we go. Correcting the initial life threat first

When I was teaching, there were a few students who were very bright but didn't do as well as expected on written tests. I remember speaking with one of them who would get so anxious at test time, she couldn't think clearly. She graduated the program, but had to learn to manage her anxiety better. For what it's worth, I didn't see that problem affect her performance in the field.

Do you like puzzles? Computer games? If so, maybe you could try to think of these tests as games. They're really not too far from that. Also, I agree with the suggestion about taking practice exams, or at least drilling yourself with lots of multiple-choice questions, like the ones in your workbook. I did that when I was a student. It helped a lot because I started to recognize similar questions as well as answers on real tests.

Thanks for the advice everyone. good insight from I can tell seasoned veterans in the field.
Now onto deciding if I want to attempt one more time. Emotionally I don't know if I can handle another kick to the head. But I guess that is for me to decide.
