I'd say that this is an indicator of one of the problems with our EMS system today.

You mean there's a problem with maintaining an Advanced First Aid Ambulance level or calling an EMT-I/99 a "paramedic?"

I did not know that NY was the only state with the EMT-Critical Care certification...

what a crazy list... got dizzy after 20 states...

Maine had it (partially phased out) and a few states certify paramedics for critical care (not the same as EMT-CC though).

Part of the problem .. too many levels. We need only 2 levels of EMT. EMT Basic and EMT- Advanced. Paramedic and Critical Paramedic should not be considered EMT's.

If they are properly educated, they should be able to remove the technician wording, since they are actually performing diagnostic capabilities.

Oh lord....Iowa has many a level that are confusing/.....

I will list them as Iowa = National level = New crap

First Responder = FR = EMR
Basic = EMT-B = EMT
I(85) = EMT-I(85) = EMT-A
Iowa Paramedic = EMT-I(99) = ???
Paramedic Specialist = Paramedic = Paramedic
CCP = CCP = CCP

Clear as mud??? thought so.

I was at a conference recently listening to some DOH guy go on and on about how great our system was and how we are so far above the national standard.. silly man.. forgot he was talking to a room full of people who actually worked in the field.

He got some rather pointed questions about the IV, Airway levels of EMT-B and how that was going to translate into the new national standards... and by the way.. how about the way an EMT-B-IV can't recert without taking the EMT-I recert test even though their card shows they are an EMT-B.. but the regular OTEPs for EMT-B are not valid for CME towards a recert... he got a bit squirmy then!
