I was about to go to PA school when I ended up getting hired by the FD and now need to renew my medic license. I haven't worked as a medic since getting my license however. I am unsure if I need a certain amount of hours an an ALS rig or do I just need to get my 48 CEs turned in with the fee to renew my license. I've read through the Cal EMA FAQs and couldn't find an answer.

If any of you guys could help me figuring out what I need to do to renew my EMT-P card I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Just do 48 hours of CE and turn it in. I used www.ems-ce.com as all their CE is considered instructor led so it all counts towards your CE requirements. They also state that any course that has a CECBEMS number will also do. It's really not too horrible.

DIVISION 9. PREHOSPITAL EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
CHAPTER 11. EMS CONTINUING EDUCATION
§ 100390.4. Continuing Education Hour (CEH)

(d) Ten CEHs will be awarded for each academic quarter unit or fifteen CEHs will be awarded for each academic semester unit for college courses in physical, social or behavioral sciences (e.g., anatomy, physiology, sociology, psychology).

§ 100390.5. CE Provider Approving Authority.

(a) Courses and/or CE providers approved by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS) or approved by EMS offices of other states are approved for use in California and need no further approval.

So, get your 48 hours CE turned in and if it's in one the above categories, you're good to go. Warning: if your application isn't received before it lapses, you'll still have to pay the $250 and you'll need to turn in your certificates (copies of course!). Got it?

On this page you can find links to all California CE providers and CECBEMS providers. http://www.emsa.ca.gov/Paramedic
