Hey there,

I just got hired by a fairly large transport company in L.A. I have orientation next week. I was wondering, are you normally paid for orientation/training hours?

Just wondering :)

I would assume so.... You are an employee, performing your duties....

I don't know. I only know one company.

Yah..it says on my job offer "orientation is the considered your first day of employment"...I just didn't think they would pay me to listen to policies and procedures...but that would be great :P

anything they require you to attend that is for the benefit of the company that can only be used at the company you should be properly compensated for.

this includes department meetings, meeting with supervisors, disciplinary meetings, mandatory trainings for the agency (not related to your certification), orientation, and thing you are doing that is being done for the benefit of the company (PR events, etc).

^ this. If it is a requirement by the company you should get paid for it. My orientation was all paid (2 weeks)

Cool, hope my company operates that way :) . Is it just your regular pay rate?

For my company, yes. Normal pay for the first hour hours, OT for anything over 8 hours, and DT for anything over 12 hours regardless of if it's training or work (we have 1-2 times where we will have a different pay scale).

We had separate "orientation" and "training".

"Orientation" was two weeks after the interview & phone call with offer of place in class. The orientation was a one-evening session that lasted about two hours where we were measured for uniforms, given a flu shot, fitted for respirator, did some paperwork and had a small company info presentation. That session was unpaid, we were not employees yet at that time.

"Training" was a 6-week long training academy. Our first day of academy was our first day of employment, and we were paid starting with that day.

I've worked for two different companies in L.A. Both times orientation and training were paid full pay as when I am working, complete with overtime.

Edit: Just read in another thread that you got hired at PRN. That is one of the two companies I worked for before moving to a 911 response service. When I got hired on there, new hire orientation/training were two days before being sent out for 6 days of third rider with FTO training, and like I said, I got paid the same as if I was working a normal shift.

Heck yes! See why you need a union?

The only time I have ever "volunteered" with an ambulance company was when I was either "working" as an intern or I was doing a pre-hire ride-along to evaluate me for hire. Once I'm an employee, if the employer wants me somewhere, even if it's sitting in a room watching videos, I'm on the clock, collecting pay.
