Learning streets in a new city or state

When you're posted listen to the radio and map yourself to each call that's dispatched. From the place the truck started and from where you start. Pay attention when people are telling stories and look up the addresses. Linking a place with a story helps you keep it in your head.

Getting a more complete medical history?

It's an important part of your history. Raises the risk of heart disease and stroke, and cancer too. Maybe lowers the risk of skin cancer if you never have any fun outside.

Leaving on the lights while on scene?

When I'm looking for a scene back in the woods or some other random place I always hear Tom Bodette from the Motel 6 Commercials: "We'll leave the light on for ya!"

    Just found out I'm pregnant

You aren't FLSA eligible until you've been 12 months on the job, so they are not obligated to hold your position or give you light duty or anything. When I was making this decision I made the rule for myself that I wouldn't work after I didn't fit in my regular pants any more. That rapidly...

Rma for minor via cell phone (nj)

This all makes me very thankful for Virginia's 14 year old age of consent. The only issue that causes is when a kid older than 14 wants a resolution different than the parent, but it can usually be worked out.

I need help. Dealing with Gross crap

Whenever you find yourself in a moment like that, focus on the positive outcome you want, take a deep breath (through your mouth if it's stinky) and plow through. It's the only way to deal with it.

The Ultimate EMS Question: Stryker or Ferno?

Which is tricky, because I usually have to stop and say to myself what the +/- means at the back of the ambulance every time.

"Is he competent?". Do you have protocols or informal standards?

This is the unpopular stance I take. People with psychiatric problems are patients, not prisoners. If they need extra security on the transport, the cops should ride in the ambulance.

    Benadryl & Dystonic Reactions

Thinking of the patient population, the drama potential is high. I've seen plenty of dystonic reactions where the patient was just having their dyskinesia and needing help, and then I've seen a handful where the patient was over the total top with the drama and hysterical thrashing. It...

Add a benzo to morphine for better analgesia?

There have been times when it seemed to me that moving the patient to the ambulance or just simply driving them over rough roads was as painful as a procedure. I have been sorely tempted many many times, but it was eliminated from our scope of practice last year. No mixing of benzos and...
